DISASTROUS EXPEDITION IN
SARAWAK,
CHOLERA WORKS DREADFUL. HÁVOC. THOUSANDS DEAD AND DYING. The expedition recently sent up the Batang Lupar River to indict punishment upon some unruly head-takers, has met with a catastrophe, saya the Singapore Free Press, which, for the present at any rate, has prevented the carrying out of the plan to sweep the country clear of these pests, for which purpose a very large force would be required. A
The first intimation of the coming disaster was received at Lingga, where, while certain contingents were gathering before proceeding to the rendezvous at Simanggang, two Malays. of that place died of cholera. On the way to Simanggang next day, a ranger from Kuching was solzed, who died at Simanggang. This appeared to be the whole extent of losses up to that date, so the greatness of the danger was not then apparent.
From reports that have come from places that supplied contingents, it appears that the disease was already busy amongst the crews o certain boats, which put back and returnedf home without, reporting their condition.

The simplicity of the device readers explana tion almost unnecessary. It barely needs translation. "Alf" is Lord Milner, The vendors are, of course, the Boers, "Paxfontein gold farm" is the synonym for peace.
Another report says the halfpenny Daily Mail appears to have been the only London paper which displayed any journalistic smart ness and enterprise in overcoming the ceasor in South Africa. It was able to give nows that peace was absolutely assured a fortnight earlier than its contemporaries by a cipher message it had arranged for:"Have bought you 1,000 Rand collieries 40s. 6d." This sent to a Lou- don address, not of course the newspaper, was not stopped by the censor, and gave the
necessary information.

A flying force, sent to reconnoître, found dix of the enemy's villages deserted and burnt them: after which, the small force, suffering sevare loss from disease, was compelled to retum without sighting the enemy.
In the meantime the main body on the river had passed through a very bad experience. The mortality hourly increased until men were literally dying all the time, the air was full of the

of men dying around,
On the third night, it is said that several hundred died. When the flying column had returned, a retirement on Simanggang" was ordered, and all speed was made to get away from the fatal region. The two days journey to Simanggang was one of the most distres sing experiences of all. By the banks, or drifting with the stream, were some fifty boats that had been.deserted in despair by the sur vivors of their crews. The banks were streiva with the dead left by the boats that had gone before, and the river was polluted by floating corpses. Through such scenes, and an atmosphere recking with corruption," "the retiring force-made its way to Oinungsans leaving its trail of dead or dying lining the banks, a terrible prey for the lurking enemy, who would probably carry off heads, and with them the death warrant for many of themselve.

THERAPION.
This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Kostan, Jabert, Vélpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata, to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.
THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, romoves all discharges from the urinary organs,. effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis- eases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious, affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.
THERAPION No. 1, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp. toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, ke, to the destruction of the sußerer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.
THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con sequences arising from early error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. - If posseses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
THERAPION may be procured of the prin- cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Pricein England 2/9 and 4/6. "In order
