HONGKONG, SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 1903,

FIRES IN HONGKONG. The report of the Hon. F. J. BADELLY on the Government Fire Brigade for the year 1901 'contains many items, of interest. It shows the number of fires that have occurred during the last ten years, with the estimated value of property destroyed in each case, and much useful information respecting places at which Fire Brigade despatch boxes are kept together with a list of telephones at the disposal of the police in the event of a fire breaking out. The most striking point about the report is the in- creasing frequency of "fites in the Colony. In the year 1891 there were only eight out breaks, with an estimated, damage to pro- perty of $32,100, while in the following year this was increased by ten, with damage reckoned at $75.550. In 1893; there is a

very large jump the returns being recorded 45 36 fires and $208,219 damage. But in the next few years a slight falling off is noticeable, and the figures de not reach beyond 35 fires unil the year 1900, when the returns show that during the twelve months no less that 51 outbreaks were notified with damage to the extent of $130,599.73. Last year another increase is reported, the number of fires in the Colony being 51 with no less than 84 of an incipient nature. At the former the damage caused is given as $630,381, while at the latter it is estimated at $212.50. This year does not at present give any promise of a decrease in numbers, for it will be remembered that during the first few months the alarm bell was constantly summoning the Brigade to THE BEST AND MOST EXPEN-duty, and, in many instances, the work of coping with the flames was rendered, extremely difficult owing to the absence of water. Consequently the flames obtained a

which directly affects the numerous in- surance companies throughout the Colony, But this is not the only section of the community which suffers through the increase of fires. Everyone in the Colony must stand to lose to some extent whenever the returns show that, the out breaks are becoming more numerous, First and foremost, the question of the water supply, as we know to our cost, is a very serious factor in the well-being of the Colony, and matters will not be improved ever increasing drain upon it
