It was the year before I came here, that she received the note you saw her hand me, her gayest holiday, dress, to awalt her dear and proceeded as usual to rig herself out in one's arrival.
But the ship itever came in, and at two in the afternoon, they wired out to Gap Rock, asking if there had not been a mistake about the ship's arrival. But they wired back, saying that she had passed there at 10.40 a.m, and hoisted her number. It was a dirty sort of morning with a strong N, E. wind and a driving mist, and the lighthouse keeper said aftewards, that she had vanished into the fog again, in the direction of Hong kong almost before he had sent the telegram
Her figure appeared bent and shrunken. into inself, yet gaily attired, with touches of almost childish finery; and over all the large grey eyes, fringed with upcurling lashes, gazing now almost beseechingly into mine, as she asked again, "Can you tell me if that steamer has a buff-coloured funnel?off.
My eyes travelled from her face to the incoming steamer far below us, that was slowly threading her way among the islands toward Hongkong Harbour.
"No madam," I replied after looking a moment, that steamer has a black funnel. A Douglas boat I should think, by the look of her...
"Strange !" she mused; a bewildered look crept into her eyes, as she drew from her purse a carefully folded scrap of paper and extended it toward me, they told me at the office, she would be in at one o'clock, and it is now half past twelve. She ought to be in sight by now."
I glanced at the sheet she held out to me. It was an ordinary office memo form, and on it was written in fading characters, "Dear Mrs. HESKUTH-The Calys is reported as having passed Gap Rock at 10.40 a.m. and may be expected at Hong kong at 1.p.m." As I cast my eyes over it again, and looked up at the date, I saw with surprise that it was dated Nov. 21st 1891. It was then '97 and as I still looked at it in puzzled wonderment, she took it again from my bands, and saying hurriedly "Perhaps I shall see her from higher up," passed on...
Toiling on my way to the summit of the Peak, I passed her again, stated by the path-side, her hands clasped on her knees, gazing with a yearning look of expectation out to the sea.
Almost involuntarily, I turned and follow ed her gaze. Not a ship was in sight. Away below and around us, the panorama stretch ed in vivid beauty like some tesselated pavement worked in sapphire and emerald, and out beyond the last emerald patch, with a stretch of blue sea sleeping sunnily around it, and the limitless occan behind, now calm Rock, a mere speck on the distant horizon and docile as a sleeping child, stood Gap
The ship we had seen approaching from lower down, had got under the land, and ns.with the exception of a few junks, lazily beating their way out to the fishing grounds, no moving thing was in sight to mar the fancy that the scene below, was ought but some fairy-woven picture, that existed but in the imagination.

As I gained the summit of the Peak, and entered into conversation with the presiding deity of the signal station, perched like the cherub whose duty it is to watch over the fortunes of poor Jack, a oft, I was awaiting an opportunity of introducing the subject that was uppermost in my mind, and endeavouring to learn more of the
strange lady who had so powerfully excited my curiosity, when a darkening of the door way of the hut in which we were sitting caused me to look up, to see the same per son 'standing on the threshold.
She stepped in, and walked hurriedly up to the signal man, without betaying the slightest sign of being aware of my pre- sence:
“Can you see anything of a steamer with a buff-coloured funnel, please," he asked again there seemed to me in infinite

That's all they ever learned about her. After a further exchange of useless telegrams they decided to send a boat out for her,
fearing, in the mist, she might have come to grief on some of the outlying islands. It was blowing too hard, and there was far too high a sea running, to have been able to send even the best of the harbour launches out for her; and by the time a larger bont had got up steam; and was ready for the search, it had grown dark.
She knocked about out there all night, and came back in the morning with no news whatever of the Calyx. What had become of her, or where she could have got to in the short run of thirty-four miles" that
separates Gap Rock from Hongkong was a
mystery.
Several days later, some odd bits of wreck- age, principally deck fittings, {were washed up on the shore at Aberdeen, and a day or to later, the body of a Chinaman was washed up on Ai Chau beach, which they thought was the earthly remains of one of the firemen of the ship. P
Then it was that wild theories began to fly around, that tried vainly to account for her disappearance. Of course collision was the one that at first found most favour but you see Sir, it takes two to make a collision. A ship can't very well run into herself, and the only two boats that had left Hongkong that day were reported all well from their distinations.
Then they struck on the one theory that. seemed to hold water.
It was surmised, that one or more of her. tanks of oil must have exploded, and blown the ship to atoms. Additional probability - was lent to this by the discovery of a life-** boat, off the beach of Great Ladrone Island
righted, it was found that the canvas cover with the name of Calyx on her stern. She was floating keel uppermost and when was still laced on, and what was more, both davits were hanging to the boat by their tackles, with the falls still neatly coiled up within the boat. That perhaps sir, is one of the great failings of the Merchant Service. boats are put on a ship for the sake of The prevalent idea seems to be, that the ornament, and the neater they can make them look, however unhandy in an emergency they may be in consequence, the better it is. Perhaps it saves a few dollars a year in rope, by having them coiled up within the boat; even if it does mean the sacrifice of a few
lives now and then.
However, everything being untouched like this, was taken as showing that the vessel must have gone down before any out, and that as she sank, the boat bad attempt could be made to swing the boats. dragged the davits, from their sockets and floated up with them, to the surface again.
That was the last piece of news that was ever understood by Mrs. Hesketh for she went down with brain fever, and when, some time after the bodies of Capt. Hesketh, the chief officer and third engineer were found floating near the harbour, she was in calmity that had understand the terrible
that had come upon her.. They say, that when she recovered, her and the first question she asked, when she mind was a blank as to what had happened, awoke from the sleep which had beef the turning point in her illness, was, when he Calyx was expected.
