FACE OF THE ROCKS! the terminus affording an excellent view of the harbour and district. There and on the summit are numerous handsome residences in the Easier style of architecture, with spacious open balconies. The foliage of the trees and shrubs (planted by the Afforestation Com mittee), by which the rocks are richly clothed, lends a charm to the whole picture, presenting, as it does, an exquisito panoramic view of beautifully diversified hill scenery. Nestling at the base of the cliffs is the city of Victoria, the capital of Hongkong. Irregular lines of streets consisting of shops and ware houses line the lower portion of the cliffs in
terrace fashion, spreading Irregularly for about four miles from east to west, and these extend down to the harbour front. There are numerous handsome public buildings. in the island, some good hotels, an excellent variety of shops, splendid banks, a free library, a theatre, churches of nearly every denomina tion, naval and military institutions and hospit als, recreation grounds, and a racecourse. Many other institutions of various kinds go to make up the most important and imposing city in the East. There are practically no horse
