A SKETCH OF DE WET,

Much new intereating information with

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY JUNE 17, 1902.

LOCAL AND GENERAL!

respect to the redoubtable general, Christian AT ONE TIME, says Indian Engineering,

De Wer, is to be found in a little book, en titled "With Steyn and De Wei" (Methuen) written by Phillip Pienaar, of the Transvant Telegraph Service, now in exile in Portuguese territory. Here is the passage in which he describes his meeting with the General, in the peighbourhood of Heilbrons:

Compared with Louis Botha, or almost any other of our genemis, De Wet presented but a sorry sight His manners are uncouth, and his dress careless to a degree. His facilessness, abrupt speech, and his habit of ihrusting his tongue against his palate at every syllable, do not lessen his undeniable unattractiveness. But De Wet, if he lacks culture, certainly has an abundance of shrewd ness, and is not without some dignity at times, And I must confess that it is chiefly owing to De Wet and Steyn that the war did not end with the fall of Pretoria. What is the secret of his success? This, he has but one idea, one only, the Independence of his country. Say to him

1

If the English win and he breaks in If the heavens føll- "Chosing his lieutenants by results only, he is assured of good service. An incorrect report and the unlucky scout is tried by court-martial Whilst giving this moders Cincinnatus duc credit for

HIS UNDOUBTED SMARTNESS, it must be borne in mind that the movements of the Free State forces were generally deter mined by the Oorlogs-commissie, a body made up of President Steyn.Judge Hertzog Advocate De Villiers, and two or three other prominent men, whose trained intellects con- cemed the plan of campaign, De Wet being entrusted with its execution. He had power to alter details according as circumstances might dictate, but that was all. And he had mes to aid him like General Philip Botha (third of three brothers, general), Commandant Olivier (now captured), Captain Theron (killed near Krugersdorp), besides others whose pames have never been heard of, but who, if De Wet were captured- to-morrow, would be both will ing and able to take bis place."

Apparently, it was Pienaar who did most of the wire tapping daring Lord Roberts's advance on. Pratorin, and secured a knowledge of the British plans, which led to

THE SNAPPING UP OF THE YEOMANRY,. a Lindley. He says, indeed" Most of the British telegrams passed through our hands before reaching their destination." He tell us, too, that De Wet left Prinslag in the Brand.

the PW. D. of Hongkong was under Surveyor General, whose best assistants left the service and started in succesful private practice in the colony. The head of the De- partment is now styled Director of Public Works, but the staff is said to be totally in- sufficient for the fast growing requirements of THE that Colony

DENGUE IN RANGOON-The Rangoon Hospital is now daily besieged by Government clerks and other nut-door patients suffering from dengue, and, a local paper says, the Assistant Surgeon's time is pretty well occupied in granting medical cerllicites. Mr. Justice Irwin is still laid up with dengue, and the hearing of all cases on his Honor's board has bad to be postponed.

SOMBRE ACQUIES ENCE:-The well- to-do Englishman "accepts with sombre acquiescence" an increase of a penny in the pound in the income-tax, says the New York Journal, Before the Boer war it was eight pence in the phund, "now it is fifteen-pence, or nearly double. The Englishman grans, but we do not hear him shouting "Anarchy!" as: the well-to-do American did when it was sought to impose the income-tax over here.

A CAMPAIGN against the motor-car has begun in Ceylon, a plaint, being laid against damage. At the time the Chief Justice of Mr. Money, for frightening a horse and causing Ceylon was in the car. What we want to get at in Singapore is that dreadful traction engine. with trailing cars, that goes clattering along roller or motor car. It has caused several and blowing off steam worse than any steam. accidents already, observes a local journal,

even if David did say so in bis haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on faith Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men,

not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet Dowhere is a promise held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and effective modern remedy called "Wampole's Preparation never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect to be believed.
