JAPANESE EMIGRANTS TO HAWAIL AND THE CHILLIPPINES

WARNINGS AGAINST OVER-SHIPMENTS.

Owing to the ease with which emigration to Hawaii can be undertaken the number of Japa nese emigrants already despatched to the i9- lands this year up to last month was about ten thousand, including males and females. As it was feared, however, that the immigration law might be more strictly enforced in the event of any more Japanese emigrants being sent to the islands, a notice was recently received by a certain firm in Yokohama interested in the emi- gration business to assume a cautious attitude. Another warning was also received to the effect that as regards. emigrants to the Philippines, there is every indication that the Government in Manila will enforce the laws adopted by the home Government and will refuse landing to all labourers under contract with emigration companies. Apropos of this information, it is stated that a reaction is feared, following the lenient attitude which has resulted in the des.. patch of an enormous number of Japanese labourers to await. This year, some emigra tion companies are considering the advisability of discontinuing to send any more emigrants from July until September, but this scheme has not yet received the general approval of their colleagues--Japan Herald.

AN AMUSING FUNCTION ON

The coronation of Edward II was a scene of desperate confusion. Archbishop Winches ley was unable to officiate, owing to the break down of health and his absence at Rome, He accordingly named a commission, consisting of three prelates, to act in his behalf. One of these, Thomas Woodlock, Bishop of Winches ter, was actually entrusted by the wretched Ed- ward with the duty of crowning him, in spite of the fact that he had deliberately played the traitor to the great sovereign who had just pas sed away

Another incident which jarred upon the affec tion felt by the nation for Edward 1 was the elevation of Piers Gaveston, the royal favorite, who had been excluded from the court, to position superior to that of any of the great magnates of the realm. The arrangements, which Gaveston had superintended, were of the crudest description, with the result that the "hallowing" of the King and Queen was not When at length the hungry and weary no completed until three o'clock in the afternoon.

Still, it was hardly to be expected that the murderer of his own flesh and blood, so to speak, should receive the warmest of welcomes. For the first time it was felt to be necessary to surround the King's person with a body of 4,000 gentleman, who were recruited from the north. The abbot and other members of the convent met the king, as usual, at the door of the Abbey, but with heavy hearts, for, accord ing to tradition, they sang Te Deum with a faint courage only..

Above all the King received the sites of anointing and crowning at the hands of a perjured preiate; for, barely three short weeks back, Archbishop Bourchier had pledged "his aim body and soul "on the safety of the young Duke of York, now lying, with his brother, the victim of a foul crime.
