In one of such cases, it was in a fairly big Shan village, I secured a man after much trouble. After leaving the village, we had to traverse a deep river, and the coolie without hesitating went ahead and swam across, and during the time I took off my clothes, he had reached whe posite side, put my luggage on the ground, and run away. When I arrived back in the village, I saw with alarm that all the men were,

The night was bright and cool and freezing, and in my Khaki clothes I walked bravely on, whistl.schnaps, and when the man was a good fellow ing and singing, to keep myself warn and got awake. I had already cavered some 12 to 15 miles, it was about z o'clock in the morning, and I thought to myself, that that fellow bad only tried to frighten me, to have a companion for his "whisky and soda" But suddenly, turning round a corner, I saw a picture which made my heart beat quicker. I must have made a little noise, for suddenly my tiger turned round, and seeing me kneeling in the lower branches of the tree, he jumped on to it, roaring, with rage in his rolling eyes. Now the lowest branch of the tree was about at meters from the-gmund (I can never understand how I managed to jump to this branch, with my knapsack on my back)-and the tiger tried to reach this branch. Standing on his hind-legs, he fixed, me continuously with his burning eyes, and I could almost feel his bot breath on my body, but he could not seize the branch, I shall never in my life forget that dreadful night, and the six hours during which that bloodthirsty beast of prey, watched my slightest movements.
