ceived by such palpable falsehoods. people living thousands of miles away be found to put faith in them. For I have invariably found the British y friendly, generous, and kind al. I might refer to my own experience, at the outbreak of the war, was in Command of a larve body of Free Staters Before we could join the burghers from the Transvaal,

TWO SEVERE DATTLES E

had been fought at Dundee and Elandslangto. Directly I came into touch with the Trans vaalers who had taken part in the light, and learned that large number of their men, in cluding General Koch and other notable leaders, had been wounded and taken prisoners, my first question was as to how the wounded and prisoners had been treated by the English, I was gladdened to hear that they had been moat kindly dealt with, and that after General Koch had succumbed to his injuries his body was respectfully handed over to his friends for bprial at their hands. Further, I had occasion to march through the country around Dewets- dorp shortly after a large English force had passed through. inquired most carefully at each farm and stopping place as to the Leivi- our of the troops, and was in every instance assured that the soldiers had not done thể slightest damage, had stolen pathing, and irad treated ail the people with kindness and respect. 1 even found that the families of burghers still.

FIGHTING WITH THE JOERS had received exactly the same treatment as the families of those who had surrendered. No distinction had been made. Again, on one occasion I was permitted to meet with the wife of my brother, General Christian De Wet, who is still fighting in the field. 1 must acknowledge that Mrs. De Wet was, at that time, very bitter against the English, but when I asked her how she was treated and whether I could procure her any necessaries, her reply was that she had been most kindly treated by the troops and that she hacked nothing. Since my own surrendes I have experienced nothing but kindness and courtesy from ite military authorities. For the last twelve months I have lived in Kroonstad, and sometimes I almost furget that war is still in the land.

!.

la conclusion, General Piet Det Wet instanc- ed the peaceable and quiet state of the town in which they were living, although thousands of soldiers were frequently passing through, as showing the thorough discipline and good con- duct of "Tammy Atkins."

MARTINIQUE DISASTER.

FEAR FOR ST. VINCENI..

FURTHER, DETAILS.

All communication with St. Vincent is stop- ped, and has been so for several days.

A qutuber of warships have started en route. to the threatened island with supplies and provisions.

In consequence of the breaking of the cable there are very few details available.

On 8th May towards eight o'clock in the morning the volcano projected a mass of smoke and stones followed by fal of fire which mautanously set fire to the town.

The rain of stones cautiued fifteen minutes The Suchet, on approaching, found vessels burned and heaps of corpses on the quay..

Not a living being was seen in the town into which it was inipossible to pencirate.

The number of victims is estimated at 30,090, Governor Moutier, Colonel Gerbant and their wives are amongst the dead."

It is believed that several persons have been able to take refuge at the Red Bluff, which is „preserved.

The Council of Ministers has decided to put the flag at half mast."

Unlimited help has been voted for Martinique. A telegram has been sent to Martinique ex- pressing the sorrow, of the entire nation.

Pessimistic news have been received from Barbadoes,

The visitors experienced alterate blasts of hot and ice cold blasts of wind and rain. The city was still burning which made landing very difficult.
