BUILDING COLLAPSES IN HONGKONGR

THE COCHRANE STREET DISASTER:

Question in the House of Commons.

In the House of Commons on the 8th Apiri, Mr. Weir asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he would ate the number of persons killed in the autumn of last year through the collapse of a house in Cochrane street, Hongkong, the cause of the collapse, the name of the owner of the house, the names of the builder and architect; and whether any compensation been paid to the widows, orphans, or dependents of the persons killed.

Mr. Chamberlain: Forty-three persons list their lives through the accident in question, which was largely due to defects of construc- tion. The owner and builder of the houses were Chinamen, and their names have not been reported. The architect of the recent structural alterations was a Mr. Hazeland. 1 am not aware whether or not any compensation has been given to the families or dependents of the deceased."

GUN PRACTICE IN THE FLEET.

Kyriel's RECORD.

Is the louse of Commons last month, Mr. Kearley asked the Secretary to the Admiralty Terrible, who last year accomplished the feat whether Petty Officer Groun-is, of H. M. 5. of putting eight hits on the prize-firing target in one minute from a 6-in. quick-firing gus while his ship was steaming past at 12 knots, received any special monetary reward for this skill; and whether, having regard to the fact that the King's prizomen at Bisley obtained a monetary prize of £150 and a gold medal and badge, the Admiralty would consider the ad- visability of instituting some national prize to be competed for each year by the captains of the guns of His Majesty's Fleet.

Mr. Arnold-Forsters: The sum of £21 155.

H.M.S. Tersible for distribution in prizes for was placed at the disposal of the captain of

firing with the 6-in. gan. The petty officer referred to received his proper share of the was the captain. The conditions under which amount alloted to the gun's crew of which be

beavy gun firing is conducted in the Royal Navy are such that it is not considered possible, even if were desirable, to institute a prize similar to the King's Prize competed for by the Volunteers at Bisley. Every effort is made by the offer of money prizes, and by taking ad- vantage of the esprit de corps and rivalry pre- vailing between different ships, to encourage
