THE MURDER OF MR.
RUTHERFORD.”
”ལ" - ཟླ་ང
STRIAL OF THE CHINAMEN:
ONE TURNS KING'S EVIDENCE.
We take the following from the Singapor Free Press of the 23rd April
This morning the four Chinamen charged on remand with the murder of Mr. Rutherford were put on trial before Mr. Beatty.
Mr. Innes said that there would be no evide ence offered against Wong Ah Kong, who would give evidence for the Crown. Wong Ah Kong was accordingly liberated.
Mr. Innes then opened the case against the other three prisoners, Leong Ah Yow, Chan Ah Kat, and Siew Weng Yew.
After going into the facts of the case, namely as to what happened at "Draycot" on the night of the murder, Mr. Innes said that there would be evidence offered that the three prisoners left Almeida-st on the night, of the murder one Carrying a knife and another evolve
a revolver, and afterwards returned. This was corroborated by Wong Ah Kong, who was asked to meet the prisoners and participate in the murder. An important paint was that the prisoners.

to fall still lower, I have been requested by on the night of the murder, Several Grms and banks to get out another, volume and take the rate down to 1/5. This I am prepared to do and will commence the work at once, as I have many of the figures ready-provided! have sufficient support But I cannot undertake to publish another volume here unless I have at least 150 copies guaranteed. I came down to Hongkong a little over six months ago to sell the first volume, a/4 to 1/1, and the very day I landed exchange stood at the latter figure. The con sequence was that I enld only six copies; so I set to work to produce a second volume, which I hoped would pay me for my trouble. How ever, although most of the firms, and banks have taken single copies I have only disposed of seventy-three books in Hongkong, whereas a small place like Canton took twenty-three This leaves me nearly a thousand dollars in debt after having produced a work of incom- parable value to the commercial and mercantile houses of this important and wealthy colony, and 1 appeal to those who are and have derived the benefit from it to relieve!me by applying or once for further copies and subscribing liberally towards the production of another volume.
Your faithfully
THO, HOLYOAKE BOX, Hongkong, April 30th, 1902.
