The Water Famine. The Clerk of the Weather has been giving us a few samples of showers for the last "couple of days, but the fail is not by any means sufficient to affect the reservoirs. What we want is a good, steady downpour for a week.

Mr. WHITEHEAD gave notice of a very pertinent, question at yesterday's Council meeting, his query being:- "In consequence of the daily diminishing sup. ply and of the fact that the water is now only turned on in the City one hour per day, will inform the Council whether the Government will take into consideration the advisability of immediately increasing the number of water stations ang the Praya so as to give an in- creased supply of water and in some measure alleviate the inconveniences and sufferings of those concerned?"

"Will The Honourable The Director of Public Works inform the Council whether the Government has taken the necessary measures to temporarily provide, if it be possible to do so in the time now available, for an adequate or additional water storage capacity should there be a short, rain fall this season, so as to safeguard the Ratepayers and the people from again next year suffering the inconveniences and evils arising out of a water famine, and state how much additional water storage has been provided, if any, since the 1st of January this year, and how much additional storage it is estimated will be provided between now and 31st January, 1903?

The reply to this we shall await with in- terest. It is Government apathy alone that is to blame for the present disgraceful state of affairs, and the public wants to see what

By the way, talking of questions, how is it that the other Unofficials so seldom put one? Surely there are plenty of subjects on which the public, whom they are supposed to represent, would like to be enlightened; but they seem content to remain merely ornamental members upon whom the Government can depend to sit still and say nothing. They appear to for- get that they are there to act as a spur to the Officials and to keep them up to their work. A question now and again does good, but to sit out from year's end to year's end complacently allowing the Officials to 'gang their ain gait will never give us a really efficient Civil Service.

At about 3 pm, a rumbling noise was beard. in the vicinity of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Cos, premises.
