AN AND RUSSIA,
THE EVENT DE WARE
By a Recent Visitor)
At the close of the Paking operations, when the writer" pald a' visie to China and Japan, there was a widespread opinion among the British military and naval officers in the North : of China that Japan would seize Russia by the beard at the earliest possible opportunity. The 'opinión: was not, of course, based
diplomalla data, but upon the easily pareht temper of the Japanese-like the Irishman they were spoiling for a fight. The writer had an interesting conversa-

Sea fighting would be a big element in the eventual result. Here he considered there could be little doubt of Japan's superiority. Her navy was the more, powerful, her officers and men are born sea men and trained on the best European models, her harbours the best in the world, her coal supply is illimitable, she would fight
