ENORMOUS DAMAGE. One of the largest fires which has occurred in Hongkong during the last fifteen years started this morning at a few minutes past two o'clock in a house occupied by a Chinaman at: 288, Queen's Road West. There was a very strong breeze blowing at the time from the South West, and an eye witness informs us that a considerable amount of kemsine was that the flames spread so rapidly as to suggest noon between the Hongkong Fastball Club

VICTIMS TO THE FLAMES and, as there was no water on the spot, the buildings were soon burning. It was some fifteen to twenty minutes after the arrival of the Brigade before a supply of water could be procured, and By this time Number 290 had caught fire. The flames mapidly spread to the buildings at the back on either side of the road, the fire would have been considerably more and, but for the great excition of the firemen sericus than it has proved to be. However in spite of the copious supply of water pro cured from the floating fire engine it was a considerable time before the brigade felt they had the fire in hand and great fears were enter. tained that it would spread a long way up the bill. As it was, it quickly got a hold of all the houses between Queen's Road and Lascar Pow and, ileaping over the narrow path between Nos, 190 and 297, gradually spread along the Street as far as Number 296 to the west and to the east, was arrested at Nember 280. On the north side of the road, numbers 281 to 285 were burnt out together with numerous smaller houses at the back, almost down to Jervoise Street. Altogether

SOME FORTY-SIX HOUSES WERE BURNT out, and many others must have sustained more or less damage from water, smoke and falling buildings. Considering the nature of the
