THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1902.

OWING to fog at Woosung the steamer Sanuki | THE” PERU” SHOOTING AFFAIR. Maru will fot be expected to arrive here until Saturday a.,, she will sail for Londen &c, on Sunday at p.m...

GUN PRACTICE will be carried out on the 16th inst, from hills about 1 miles, N. W of Lai-chi-kok, in a westerly direction, at targets te placed on the lower slopes of Chonghue Island, and on the 7th inst over a land range from the road leading to Customs Pass, at targets in the direction of Ng-tau-kok

THE CLERKSHIPS of the military branches of the War Office are henceforth to be filled by ex-soldiers. The Secretary of State for War has decided to do away with the civilian clerks in this portion of the Department, and to replace them by specially selected and qualified retired officers, ex-soldiers, and pensioners, who will be appointed as poats fall vacant.

A CEYLON CONTINGENT Calcutta, 4th March. The Englishman, has received the following telegram from Ceylon-There are fair prospects of raising an unmounted Ceylon contingent for the war. Can Indian efforts be revised? If not, the Times of Ceylon renews its suggestion that, individual applications from India to join the Ceylon corps ought to be considered.

THE REMOUNT QUESTION-London, 4th March. A blue-book on the remounts has been published and shows that the department, at the outbreak of the war, was totally in adquate. Early in 1900 urgent demands led to a series of telegrams to Lord Roberts, the advisability of sparing hinting at horses. Mr. Brodrick telegraphed, on the 17th November, that the supply asked for would cost £450,000 per mouth. Similar telegrams.were sent to Lord Kitchener. Mr. Brodrick telegraphed, on the 26th November, 1901, that he could not continue indefinitely sending 10,000 to 12,000 remounts every mouth for column commanders to use up in a few days. Lord Kitchener, on the 15th January, 1902, urged that a more careful selection be made as many of the horses sent out were quite unsuitable.

Hafeland, Albert Marshall, chief ste ward of the Pacific Mail Steamship Peru, was again brought up charged with unlawfully, feloniously and with malice aforethought shoot- Captain Albert Freeman Fillsbury, while in Hongkong waters, on the 23rd January last..

Inspector John Gauld stated that abou! noon on the 23rd January he saw the pri: soner and Capt. Pillsbury, of the are in the charge mom at Trim-sa-tsui Police Station. The captain said he wished to charge the prisoner with attempting to mur der him. Witness detained Marshall and went with the captain on board of the Peru. There he was handed Cap. Pillsbury's jacket, a rifle one box of ammunition, and part of the pan nelling of a cabin with a bullet hole through it He then returned to the station and charged the prisoner. He read over and explained the charge, and then administered the usual cau tion. The prisoner then made a statement which witness took down in writing.

The prisoner's statement was as follows: "I had no intention of injuring him; I did not know the weapon was loaded. It has been hanging on the mack for a long time. The captain himself knows that I sometimes go off my head a bit in consequence of an injury which I received, fractured skull."

Prisoner was committed for trial at the next criminal sessions.

This celebrated Japanese musical play will find favour with a Hongkong audience when- ever Mr. Henry. Dallas visits the, City Hall with such a capital company as that which occupied the boards last evening and told, in very a charming manner, the amusing tale of a tea house. The story is too, familiar to need repeating, and the several very slight additions which 'have been made add greatly to the humour of the piece. Eright and catchy music, dainty songs, witty comedians, excellent casting and scenery are the features of the comedy, and small wonder, therefore, that a fell house was kept highly delighted while the thread of the plot was being gradually and prettily unwoven. The limited space at the THE LIEN SHAN SPIRIT TEMPLE disposal of the company was certainly very Captain J. In the "Amorous Gold. fish," and "A Geisha's Life" she was also heard to great advantage, and won farther favour in the "Kissing Duct" with Mr. Percival Knight, as Lieut. Reginald Fairfax. Miss Eva Clark was well-suited to the part of Molly Seamore, for her singing and dancing were certainly clever. Her rendering of "Chan Kina" was

LUZON SUGAR REFINING COMPANY," "LIMITED.

The following is the report för presentation to the shareholders at the twentieth annual meeting to be held at the offices of the General Agents at 12.15 p.m. on Thursday, 27th March, 1902.

The General Agents beg to submit their report for the year 1901, with a statement of accounts to 31st December last.

As stated at the last annual meeting, it was found necessary to close the refinery soon after the beginning of the year under review, there being no sufficient outlet for its sugars, and the same reason has prevented the resumption of work' siace.

4

The Stocks of Sugar on hand were disposed of in the spring of last year, and current expense reduced to the lowest point consistent with proper care of the buildings and machinery, etc., which have been maintained in good order.

Including $10,011.85 åt debit on 31st Decem ber, 1900, the Accounts show a loss of $50,675.81, which is carried forward to next

account.
