ments, it is said that a person placing an ear against a rod held in contact with the hull of a vessel will be able to hear the bell three to five miles away; in fact, it is believed that the ringing of the hell will be heard at a distance of ten or twelve miles. However that may be, the experiments at Egg Rock will be watched with considerable interest by all mariners, and should the experiment prove a success no doubt other submarine bells will soon be placed

So successful were the American tests that further trials are it is stated, to be made with two bells submerged at either side of the entrance to Boston Harbour, and connected electrically with the shore. The bells will sound different numbers of strokes, and so can ́ easily be identified. They are to be so placed that a line drawn upon the chart along a course leading directly to the beginning of the harbour channel will also trace the coure where the two bells will be heard simultaneously. Thus if the navigator hears either bell first tin evident that he is off his proper course and by calculating the speed of sound under water the interval between the sounding of the two bells will show the distance from the course in one direction, or the other at any given moment.. Such a system in connection with a signal code. also offers, of course, a means of communica tion between lightships and other vessels, or between the ship and the shore.
