THE U. S. S. FLAGS MIP NEW YORK, carrying the flag of Admiral Rodgers arrived yesterday from Manila and exchange of salutes took place. The New York is an amoured twin screw steel cruiser with displacement of 8.43 tons and was built in Philadelphia. Her chief armament consists of 68-in and 17 4in guns and 8, 6 pr. and 21 pr. She also carries two torpedo tubes. Her estimated-speed is 210 knots, and has complement of soz man.

APPARENTLY TE RECENT FIRES in Canton has done, the city a certain amount of good. We learn that the Viceroy has given 1326d orders that in future all houses in course of erection are to be built of good material, with room for plenty of ventilation and light. The strects are also to be widened by one foot on either side.

RICHARD ELFERT of 5. M. S. Kaiserin Augusta was charged with being drunk, and doing damage to the extent of 40 cents, and was fined $3 by Mr. Kemp this moming and order ed to make good the damage by compensating the plaintiff in the sum of 40 cents. In both cases the fines were paid.
