He did "We are sorry for Mr. Lockhart, for his not mean to insinuate that the senior girls chance of doing much is very minute; in our should have thrown it up, but in his own estima opinion, Wel-hal webis in the position of the tion, he was of opinion that the Oxford local proverbial sow's car, it cannot be mide into a oxaminations were not suited to the require silken purse. With shade,we hopeMr, Lockhart obtain "A" wider view: "of the world's will at once plant vast numbers of trees all over affairs by the perusal of the daily papers, the territory—and good hooses it would be a That the people should ran away with the model watering-plaer, far superior in every way idea that an Inspector of School's duties, were

Concluding, he thought that strictly to the English system of colonisation, great credit is due in the Belilios school staff namely that by the energy of the private citizen. for the efficient manner in which they bad Klachows and Dalnays may be all right, though severally done their duties. He apologised for they are not yet proved themselves to be so, detaining the company so leng, and asked but they are special cases and have nothing in Mrs. Lockhart to kindly distribute the prizes, common with Wei hai wel. Mr. Irving then proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Lochhart for distributing the prizes and also three cheers and a "tiger" which was vociferously given.
The Hon J. II. Stewart Lockhart then rose and on behalf of his wife; in a few well chosen words thanked Mr. Irving and the company present, and at the same praised Mr. Ivring for the able way in which he had, advocated education in the Colony, Hosald" we have not Mr. Brewis here, but Mr. Irving is quite worthy of Mr. Brewin's footsteps? He also thanked Mrs. Bateman, the head mistress, and said that this would be his last occasion here on a func. tion of auch a nature but wherever he may be the thoughts of the Belilios school will be in his and his wife's memory, He then asked 'those young ladies who did not get any prizes, not to be discouraged, but to let the matter act as an impetus to them. Three cheers were then given to Mrs. Bateman and stoff, and the proceedings wound up with "God save the King Miss Chunyut Secom- panying.

assisted importers, the Customs gavo special loading facilities, and Chinese merchants in general were found quite willing to come to some arrangement to carry over their open contracts. The main factor, however, to minimise losses in England was the continued firmness of prices in Manchester: which market kept up very well during the worsttimes, in consequence chiefly of the short cotton crop in America. To- wards the end of the year the market became somewhat more lively, and fair quantities were contracted for by native dealers. The comparative failure of cotton mills in Shanghai is ascribed to the high prices that have ruled for raw cotton, the unexpected in- crease in the rate of wages, and the competi tion of the American and Japanese mills. The decks and shipbuilding yards in that port (the three largest are now amalgamated) have done exceptionally well during the Inst year. The requirements of the allied forces have filled the vards for orders for steam launches and lighters. The ever-incresing tonnage visiting · the port has kept them busy with overhauls and repairs. Some of the local yards are venturing into shipbuilding proper; and a river steamer of over 2,000 tons burden, entirely built in Shanghai was recently launched to the order of a British firm. The consequence of these developments. is that the port and town of Shanghai is rapidly increasing in general pros. perity.-Engineering.

CANTON NOTES.
(From our own Correspondent) ·
Canton, March 4th.
FIRE.
Canton had another very destructive fire last night. Over one hundred houses were des troyed. The strong wind caused the fire to burn fiercely. The flames shot up high above the houses. The fire was in the neighborhood of Ng Sin Mun and it looked at one time that the school buildings and residences of the Southern Baptist Mission would be destroyed. Last year a fire burned several hundred houses just east of the place where the fire was Inst night. It is many years since Canton has had so many destructive fires within such a short time. CHOLERA.
