CHOLERA AT CANTON.

As reported in our edition last Saturday, cholera has broken out at Canton, and, accord ing to latest information from our correspond. ent, the number of deaths reported is on the increase and the disease appears to be of a most virulent type. It is affecting the Chinese to an alarming extent and Europeans have also been attacked with two fatal results. The first was a Mr. T. Agnew, only 23 years of age, who was in the employ of the Chinese Imperial Customs. He drank a quantity of unfiltered water and died on Thursday, while the same day, Lieut. Commander E. A. Baird, of H.B.M's. günboat, Britomart was seized with pain in the stomach and died the next afternoon. Only the previous Afternoon he was playing tennis on the Sha mean. His fuperal took (place Saturday on French IslandÅ

ACTION AT HONGKONG!

At a special meeting of the Sanitary Board. held this morning the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. Clark) moved the suspension of the Stand- ing Orders to enable the board to consider what action, if any, should be taken in con nection with the outbreak of cholera at Canton. The President seconded the motion and it was carried..

The Secretary then read a communication from H. M. Acting Consul General at Canton (Mr. J. Scott), in reply to a telegram received, stating that for some time past there had been rumours of sickness amongst the Chinese due to the impura condition of the walls and other water supply in Cantón City consequent on the unusually prolonged absence of rain. But the condition was nothing more than usually occurred at this season of the year in a con gested and feted City. The outbreak was known as fruit cholera-unripe fruit being con sidered primarily the cause of the diseass. During the past week two deaths had occurred among the European population a Customs tidewalter, named Agnew, and Captain Baird, of H. M. S. Britomar, having falles victims to the disease.

The Presedent pointed out that from the reports it was impossible to form any con

as to what kind of cholera it was. clusion

Dr. Clark thought the Board should take some action in the matter, and sugges- ted that they obtain the authority of the Government to issue advertisements in the local press warning the public against the consumption of unripe or overripe fruit, or of unboiled milk in view of the prevalence of cholera at Casson, He further suggested that the Acting Captain Superintendent of Police ba requested to arrange for the boarding of all steamers or launches carrying passengers from Canton with a view of ascertaining whether any sick persons or dead bodies were on board. These were put in the form of resolutions,

Mr. Badeley seconded them, remarking that be had already given instructions to the Ine spector of the Water Police to arrange for the boarding of the steamers, je dost

Mr. Osborne thought something might be done with regard to the supervison of those responsible for the sale of fruit. He hoped that the police would have it impressed upon them that it was only the launches coming from Canton that were to be boarded. Otherwise

There was a strong breeze from the East which held throughout the race. Erica was first across the line 15 secs. after the gun; Iris to secs. later out by the mark boat; the rest would be a great deal of trouble, about 40 secs. behind Iris in a bunch, among The Hon.
