A TRAGIC END A Chinaman met with a tragic end in Bangkok recently. Whilst he was lifting a basket of aerated waters which had been left standing in the sun for some time one of the bottles burst. The bottom portion flew upwards and its jagged edge struck the unfortunate man in the neck, severing the jogu. as vein. He was carried into an adjoining shop and a doctor was sent for, but before the medical man could arrive the poor Chinoman had bled to death..

scheme when the site for the dock is secured. The present No. 1 Dock is the largest graving dock in the East, The proposeti new dock is designed for larger vessels. 11docks take years to negotiate they also take years to make. Already we have been confronted with a ship of war of too great beam to enter No. 1 Dock with safety. Several ships are built, and probably in the next decade many more ships will be built, o dimensions too great to enter the No. 1 Dock ́at Kowloon. The tendency of modem ship- building for the mercantile marine is all that way. On the other hand, it must be noted that for English ships of war a provision is being made in Hongkong, by the new Admiralty Dock now in course of construction, and another large dock is being constructed by our neigh. bours Messrs. Butterfield'&'Swire besides other docks in the East. Foreign ships of war muster here in considerable numbers, as our figures shew, and, despite the Admiralty Dock, we may expect to get some, though fewer English and more foreign, ships of war to the Docks in the future. With regard to shipbuildi ing, if undertaken on a large scale, it could only be made more profitable when run as a distinct department with the staff aud plant set apart exclusively. Hitherto the new work has had to be taken along with the repair. work, which cannot under, any circumstances be allowed to wait When labour, plant and materials, are urgently required, and limited, the margin of each, required for or engaged upon new work is frequently, as occasion re quires, taken away to some break down or damaged vessel. This is unprofitable.
