In opening the meeting the Secretary said - Gentlemen, the object of this evening's meeting is to discuss what further steps are to be taken with regard to approaching the owners with respect to the rise of pay already asked for, As you are aware, a letter asking for the rise was sent in to the various owners on the ixth inst. and this they have utterly ignored. The question is are we to allow our reasonable request to be thus calmly ignored, or are we to send in a second letter and, in the event of its being similarly ignored, cease work?
A telegram has to-day been received from the Shanghai Committee saying that the owners have promised an increate gat have not stated the amount, and, pending further particulars,
the Shanghai Committee has suspended, its meetings.
In the event of our deciding to press ove claim, are we to stand out for the full amount. asked, or are we to accept whatever rise Shanghai agrees to 7. These, Gentlemen, are the questions before us, and if we hope to succeed we must come to some definite con- clusion to-night.
A discussion then followed as the advisability of sending in a second letter to the Owners,
