LEGAL INTELLIGENCE.

SUPREME COURT,

CRIMINAL SESSIONS. (Before His Lordship A. G. Wist, Acting Chief Justice)

February 18th.

The Criminal Sessions were opened this morning at the Supreme Court before the Acting Chief Justice. His Lordship A. G. Wise. There were five cases down for hearing envolv ing the trial of twelve prisoners. Three of these were indicted for manslaughter, seven for armed robbery, one for unlawful wounding and inflicting grevious bodily harm, and one for uttering forged bank notes and having forged bank notes in his possession.

ALLEGED ARMED ROBBERY, U. Cheek, U Fan, Cheung So, Lam Kan, Ip Tsan, Lam Ngan, and Lam Heung were placed in the dock for the purpose of pleading to counts charging them with armed robbery, larceny, and receiving stolen goods. The third, sixth and last prisoners pleaded not guilty to all counts and the others guilty. The case was adjourned till Monday.

FORGED BANK.NOTES.

Tang Yau Tai was indicted for uttering two forged bank notes ench for Sra and also with having forged bank notes in his possession on the 7th January at Sam Shui Po.

The Attorney General (Mr. W. M. Goodman, K.C.), instructed by the Crown Solicitor (Mr. F. B. L. Bowley) prosecuted, and the prisoner, who pleaded not guilty, was undefended.

The following jury was sworn in-Messrs. R. Douglas, W. Schumacher, J. Gillespie, D, A. Cordeiro, B. M. C. da Cunha, A. Rumjahn, F. Q. R. Xavier..

In opening the case the Attorney General said it was a very simple case and 'would not occupy much of their time. The prisoner was charged on an indictment which had three counts the first for uttering a forged Bank note for $to, and the second for uttering on the same day about a couple of hours afterwards another note for $10. The third count was for having a bank note in his possession know ing it to have been forged. The law, he said, was naturally very strict in such matters, and

it was not only an offense to utter a forged note, but it was also an offence to have one in your possession without lawful authority or a good reason for it. What was alleged on the part of the prosecution in the present case was that the prisoner, uttered the forged notes in question.

The facts were to the effect that about four o'clock in the afternoon of

the 7th January at a place close by Sam Shiu Po the prisoner went to a shop con- taining miscellaneous goods kept by a woman and asked for a dollars worth of rice. He got that together with So change so, he did very well over the transaction. One would have thought he would have gone away to some other place but presumably he was emboldened by the great sucess of his first performance for
