OUR LONDON LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.).

LONDON, January 9th..

THE GERMAN TRESS' has recently surpassed itself in the manufac ture of abominable lies respecting the conduct of our army in South Africa, and the action of Indy in forwarding to Earl Roberts, certain cuttings of a peculissly, vile nature has some what brought matters to a climax. At any rale, his correspondent succeeded in eliciting from the Commander-in-Chief n dignified but emphatic and categorical denial of such part of the horrible accusations as dealt with the treat ment of femples. The greater part of these. foreign libels are entirely unknown to English people for the simple reason that — to quote the Telegraph they are, of so gross and revolting a character that no reputable publi cation could possibly reproduce them trans- Inted. Nevertheless in general terms, and, at least in outline we have been made acquainted with the fact that the campaign of slander bas been devoted for the most part to the pro pagation of

STORIES OF OUTRAGE

against the Boer women and children; not merely condoned, but actually organized and legalised by Lord Kitchener for the purpose of degrading and eventually eradicating the Roer race, Dr. Conan Doyle and Mr. Maxwell of the Stakdard have now taken the matter in hand, and are about to issue a mass of carefully col- tected evidence which will prove to all who desire to hear the truth, that to the British soldier of every rank, unprotected women and helpless children are sacred. Lord Roberts' brief letter of " positive assurance" has been received with slightly more attention than our previous experience of the Continental Press would have led us to expect.

RETRIBUTION.

But, another and perhaps more powerful motive is likely to be brought into play by the discussion gathering round a mysterious letter of which the origin has yet to be traced,

Two or three days ago the London Express published a despatch from its Berlin correspondent which set forth that Lord George Hamilton, acting on behalf of the Indian Government, had declined the tenders fog railway supplies contracts, of the two largest mill-owners of Germany, in the following terms:-"The Indian Government regrets that, owing to the violently anti-British tone of the German Press and public opinion, there exists, throughout His Majesty's dominions, a feeling most unfavourable to, and incompatible with the extension of German commerce in com- petition with that of other countries,"

In London a certain incredulity prevailed. for Lord George is not generally regarded as: the class of statesman who makes a determined sand, when sich uncomfortable prominence can be evaded, or put upon one of his collea gues. Still, a very considerable cry of Jubila tion went up from commercial circles, where the full meaning of the protest could be pro- perly understood. Lord George Hamilton, however, denies all acquaintance with the letter, and, the source from whence the account emanated being a very rellable one, opines that

A CLEVER FORGERY”

is doing political duty in Berlin. Reference was made to the supposed communication of the Indian Secretary, in two German papers at least a week ago, but in view of the existing depression in the Fatherland, the editors of both sheets made only a veiled allusion, and passed lightly over the subject. Copies of the forged letter are also in the hands of two other pressmen, and such evidence as is to hand, goes to prove that the English Journalist by no means stands alone in accepting it as genuine. Further developments are awalted with much curiosity. Perhaps the most interesting point of the incident lies in the thorough approval expressed by the public of the action Lord George was reputed to have taken to mark the British official sense of indignation at the re petition of outrageous libels against our Army, after they have been amply refuted.

Among the whole community, excepting the

TRADE BETWEEN RUSSIA AND handful of fanatics who follow Messrs. Stends

JAPAN.

Lloyd-George, and fabouchere the hope is entertained that the reality of the near future, may be equal to the forgery which occupies the

attention of the present.

The mention of

THE PRO-BOER PARTY

An official of the Japanese Commercial Bureau has arrived in Russia with a commis sion from the Japanese, Minister of Commerce, and will shortly, visit Odessa for the purpose of supplementing the information already gather instinctively turns the mind to Bristol, where ed by previous Japanese delegations in regard one day this week, they held a little meeting- to the conditions and requirements of Russian with carefully barred doors, and barricaded markets and the possibility of establishing new

streets. A number of police also protected the markets in Russia for Japanese product. He
