We cannot say that we think very much of YUAN SHIH-KAI's advice with regard to

To our mind it would be a case of too many cooks, for it is hardly to be imagined that these men would not each strive to advise China according to the policy of his own particular country, and what that would amount to we all know well THE SNOWDROP MINISTRELS W enough. The director of the Lessing Theatre last week called in a. photographer to reproduce for an illustrated journal some of the principal scenes of a new play. At the last moment the leading young gentleman broke from the group declaring that posing for a journal was no part of his contract and that lie declined to do it. Thereupon he left the theatre and was fined twenty marks by his manager, Upon this he brought an action which will decide'virtually whether an actor is called upon to submit himself to the camera for advertising purposes."

LAW IN JAMAICA:-Recent references to law in Jamaica have revived memories of the legal system there in vogue, and, among them, this story. The friends of a prisoner charged with murder "got at" a coloured gentleman on the jury and impressed upon him that in no circumstances should he consent to any other verdict than one of manslaugh.. ter They made it clear that there would be opposition, but he was to stick to man- slaughter and not to argue. In: due course the jury retired, as is usual in those parts, to an upper verandah, and the spectators soon saw eleven men surrounding and arguing with one "dark" Jutor. The prisoner's friends felt sure that their ally had not deceived them, and were delighted when the unanimous verdict of manslaughter was given. Soon they met the qbstinate juryman. "I did as you. told me," quoth he "they all wanted to acquit him, but I would have nothing but manslaughter!"
