THE FAVOURITE VOCALISTS. The toast having been most enthusiastically drunk, the Vice-chairman toasted the Visitors, and in the course of his observations, referred to the services of S. Sergt. Ward of the R.A.M.C., and Sergt. Simmers of the R.E. Both of them were leaving the Colony and he could assure them that their services were very greatly apprecinted. They had rendered material assistance in many concerts and he hoped they would have a pléasant voyage and would meet again some other day. They have been the best of fellows,” he concluded.

shortly leaving. They were also sorry to miss (Applause). He asked the Company to drink them because they had always been such jolly | to the health of those they would leave behind Rood company and had joined in amusements one with another. There had of course · been many changes during their stay in the Colony, andsome, he regrettedio say, would be left behind in the Hanpy Valley, while others would still continue to represent them in. Hongkong. Having mentioned the names of several of those who would still be with them at Hong- kong, the Chairman said they did not know at present who would take the place of Q.M.S. Whoever it was he could state that the staff scrgts, and sergts, woremained in the Colony were emulated with the same spirit as those that were leaving. They had borne a good name. and he trusted their successors would do their utmost to keep that good name. He urged them to stand well with their officers and with their IRCH, Before concluding he made special reference in Master Gunner Rourke, and Sergis. Gosnold and Hayward. They were members of the Mess and the first two were very old members. They had seen the Mess in different stages, and the two Sergeants hoped shortly to have their promo- tion to staff mak (Applause).
note of a very jovial gathering assembled at the Victoria Barracks on Saturday evening. was a farewell concert given on the occasion of the departure from the Colony of Nost.50 and 82 Companies of the Royal Artillery. The rank and file were present in large numbers, not only from the R.A.. but, from the R.E., A.O.C., R.W.F., R.A.M.C. and the Navy, to say nothing of a good sprinkling of civilians Had more room been available doubtless many others would have, attended, for the function was one of those brilliant successes which our Tommies have the knack of organising. In this instance the whole of the arrangements were in the hands of Master Gunner Thurlow, Sergi. Hawkins and Sergt. Knight, and the result of their efforts could be' seen on every hand. The snug little Seigeants Mess had been tastefully decorated with bunting, showing up. conspicumsly several trophies belonging to the Corps. One of the walls was to be seen a file memento from Peking secured during the recent operations by Sergis. Gosnold and Rose, while on another stood the challenge shield which their football club won last year: Pictures of famous officers were hung on either side and the whole went to smarten up a very pretty little hall, Nedless to state, it was crowded to overflowing so that many were forced to stand on the verandah outside under the light of Chinese lanterns. The whole of the proceedings went with a swing and a dash and will doubtless long remain in the minds of the departing friends as one of the best turn. outs in the Sergeants Mess at the Victoria

The No. 5o Company, or the old 38th Southern, are bound for Singapore, at the end of the week, while the end, late the 25th Eastern, will go to India, both Companies making the voyage on the Malacca. Since their stay in the Colony they have made many Triends and will always look with pleasure on the happy days spent at Hongkong,
GOOD BYE AND GOD SPEED
Master Gunner Rourke was next for a warrant (Applause), and he trusted they would have an opportunity of congratulating him before he left (Applause). There was a mail due the next day and it was possible that his promotion would arrive by it. Theie felt, he remarked, that if he went away without it he would not have a chance of standing his footing (Laughter). "Good bye and God speed," he concluded "and I hope you will never come back to Hongkong. but if it should be your misfortuncio return you will have a jolly good welcome" (Applause).
The toast was drunk with great enthusiasm, and the musical part of the programme was then continued, S. Sgt. Ward contributing onc of his humorous songs. Of course he was en cored, and that in a very determined manner. After he had given the inevitable response Mr. Oxberry favoured the company with a rendering of the old favourite "By the fountain" for which he was called upon to furnish na encore. Sergt. Mr. Whittich also contributed to the brat part of the pro gramine and, as "gual, his selection received the applause it so well nerited. Then followed an interval, during which a good substantial Kupper was disposed of in-n manner becoming the representatives of the Army and Navy. Plates and empty dishes having been removed, glasses were charged and, at the instance of the Chairman, the loyal teast was drunk. Then fallowed the second part of the programme à banjó selection by Mr Withers being loudly applauded. Band Sgts. THEY HAD BERN RESPECTED,
He asked his brother Sergeants to drink to the health of their hosts (Applause).
The toast having been, duly drank and accorded musical honours, the items on the programme were proceeded with Sergts French and Simmers contributing their patriotic duett "Army and Navy". They were loudly ap planded and, as an encore, rendered" Larboard Watch". Q.M.S. Mepham delighted the as- sembly with selections on the piano from the "Runaway Girl" and then further speaking

Lieut. Thompson kindly consented to favour the company with a song, and needless to state his contribution was loudly received. He first sang My bonnie Jean" and, as an encore, gave his old favourite "Mary." Sergt. Amold
sang "Annie Laurie Efter which S. Sergt. Ward obliged with another song and the even- ing was terminated by those present joining hands and singing "Auld Lang Syne."

In proposing the health of the Officers, Non- commissioned Officers, and Men of the 50th and 82nd Companies, R.G.A., the Chairman said he would make a few observations regard ing their commates who were shortly leaving the station for Singapore and India, and, in connection with the mast he would specially mention the names of Master Gunner Rourke, Sergeant Gosnold and Sergeant Hayward who would soon be leaving for England. It was only a few months, he remarked, since he stood up in that Mess and made a similar proposition on the occasion of the departure of the 25th, Southern Division, R. A. At that time they had no knowledge that the other Companies were to follow so shortly afterwards. However, they were going, and they had met together that evening to spend a few hours in each others company, the last he supposed they would ever have collectively. They certainly felt honoured that evening by the presence of so many of their officers (Applause). As he had often said before and would repeat again, there
