AT THE MAGISTRACY,

January 18th.

GAMBLING HOUSE RAIDED, For sometime past the police have had their suspicious that gambling was being carried on at No. 4, Tai Weng Street. The proprietors employed watchmen to give warning of the approach of a constable, so when raided no evidence could be secured. Yesterday, how- ever, the police caught them in the act, and the two Chinese who keep the house were fined Sgo each, with an alternative of 1 months in gaol, and the visitors $3 each, or 10 days.

MISTOOK SERGbant for thiEF. Sergeant McSwayed last night had a sharp tussle with a Chinese in the Yau-ma-ti district. He was walking through a dark alley, when he heard the swish of some object passing his head. When it struck the ground he ran for-- ward and found it was a heavy stick of wood. On investigation be saw a Chinese crouching. in a dark doorway and placed him under arrest, after some resistance. On further search he discovered some pieces of iron evidently stolen. As he stooped to pick them up the coolie made a break for liberty and a genuine fight ensued in which the prisoner was knocked insensible, and the Sergeant's face this morning tooks as if he had tried to arrest a full grown, Thomas Cat. The defence of the prisoner was that he mistook the Sergeant for a thief, but it was not a sufficiently plausible tale to prevent." the Magistrate from sentencing him to six weeks hard labour.

#

AN ALLEGED CUTTING AFFRAY.

Committed for Trial.

A coolie claimed that a woman, the pro- prietress of a cargo boat, had kidnapped his wife and sold his daughter. He is alleged to have taken justice into his own hands and used a butcher's cleaver on the head of the lady in question, on Tatuary 7th. She claims that in April, 1901, he attempted to do the same thing, and that it had reached a point where," patience had ceased to be a virtue The prisoner Company, and Balance Sheet for the year end-endeavoured to establish an alibi, but was com- ing.31st December, 1991. The Net Profits for mitted for trial at the next Criminal Sessions. the year, including the amount brought forward 'from the previous year, amount to $40,609.87. From this amount an Interim Dividend of $1.go per share has already been paid, and after writing off Directors' and Auditor's Fees, it is now proposed to pay & Final Dividend of $160 per share, making a total Dividend for the twelve months of $3.10 per share, and to carry forward the Balance of $1,309.87 to credit of New Profit and Loss Account.

DIRECTORE.

Hon. J. J. Keswick having retired, Hon. J. J. Bell-Irving has been appointed in his stead and this appointment now requires confirmation.

Hon. C. P. Chater and Mr. C. 5. Sharp retire by rotation, but offer themselves for re-election.

AUDIT.

FUNERALS AND MOURNING IN SOUTH CHINA,

The following interesting article by Mencius appeared in a recent issue of the N.G, Dally' News:-

..

It is well known that the Chinese pay very great attention to, and spend large sums of money on the obsequies of the dead. At least, this is so in the South of China. The best wood of their forests, apparently, is not inwa to provide beautiful and commodious houses for the living, but to ensure an elaborate and substantial coffin for the departed. This habit is not confined to the rich it isalso characteristic of the poor. No one can live long in China, without having made the personal sequaintance of those who have involved themselves in crushing debt, because the survivors were un- MOWBRAY S. NORTHECOTF,

to the neighbours that "no expense has, been spared." Not only so, but a more intimate acquaintance with the inner life of the peopls would reveal many a domestic tragedy, resulting from this natural but deplorable tendency. I find among my notes a reference to a case that may be accepted as trustworthy, and also may not, be regarded as exceptional. A poor man died and the survivors had not the ready money to secure an elaborate funeral. His relatives consisted of a wife, a son, and the son's wife.' What happened? The daughter-in-law, who had been married for four years, was childless. Her husband therefore, and his mother, sought 21,859.87.

that they would."
