GAMBLING.

The following from the "Queen" will, we' think, interest most of our readers →→

To gamble, ie, to play extravagantly for money, as lexicographers define the word, 'seems to be part and parcel of human natorė, and, like most other vices, it is common in every quarter of the globe. An old writer has - very truly pointed out that "if a person takes pleasure in playing at cards or dice, there is no reason why he mây not amuse himself in that manner, quite as innocently as in painting, dancing, music, hunting, or any other similar diversious," but the history of gambling clearly shows that the man or woman who succumbato ita influence rarely, if ever, realises the significanss of the word moderation. Dicing.in this coun- try is said to date from the time of the Romans, ancient chroniclers recording that clergymen and bishops were fond of the pastime, and it wasnt long before, enactments were neces- sary to guard the unwary player from being cheated by the use of false dice. Shakespeare tells us that cards were'n fashionable amuse- ment in the reign of Henry VIII, and indeed, Bishop Latimer illustrated his remarks in two famous sermons by a series of'similics drawn from:familiar card games of 'bis times, while a glance at Pepys's Diary" soon proves that the Restoration brought card playing and the use of the dice once more into prominence. During many reigns Royal personages were accus- tomed to play at the Groom Porter's, that office, in fact not being abolished till the reign of George 111, and it is rather a curious coinci- dence that gambling in this country probably reached its zenith soon after that occurrence, viz. during the times of the Regency and when George IV, was King. In the two plays now running at West End theatres which represent those happy-go-lucky years references are frequently made to the fashionable vice of the day. "Becky Sharp" wa'ns Amelia Osborne not to let her husband play of an evening with Captain Crawley, and the scene at Crockford's in The Last of the Dandies reminds the specia tor that it is almost impossible to overrate what took place in the old fishmonger's celebrated gambling house.

Crockford's, of course, has always occupied a prominent position in the annals of gambling. history, mainly perhaps, on account of the great names associated with it, but there were several other clubs and establishments which ran it fairly close, and it must not be forgotten that ladies of rank kept public gaming houses. Ashton, in his "History of Gambling in England, quotes reveral

frank the Times, which let in a good deal of 'curious light on the doings of these, Circes. For instance, on March 13. 1797, it was recorded that informations were heard at Modern Japan-the Japan of progress and

These translations and reproductions have suppling Herr M. v. Brandt with the material for a thoughtful essay in the Octobefasue of the Deutsche Bundschau,

the Japanese drama. that originally had copied much of the style and traditions of the Chinese stage, has broken through the convention- alities of this schout; and a healthy naturalisms now allows the native actor to produce rent human and emotional effects. Its public, it is true, stands confessedly on the plane of that of the suburbang theatre with us or that of the Parisian 'ambigu. It enjoys principally those scenes in which blood flows, and this effect, on the Japanese stage, lis very realistically pra. duced through the use of red fluids. But the public is swayed also by the exhibition of severe spiritual crises, especially if the motif spring from the soil of

The bumorous qualities of Tapanese art are, we are told, admirable and original; Japanese caricature especially is on a high level. The Japanese conception of humour does not vary much from the European. Says the writer
