CANTON NOTES.

EXECUTIONS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

2

-- GANTON, January 9th. An unusual number of prisoners have been executed during the past ten days. The 'num. her cannot be much less than one hundred. It is said that for some time no sanction for the execution of criminals has been received from the North, hence the number of criminals under sentence has increased. A despatch-arrived confirming the sentence of a large number of “ prisoners and, as the prisons are full, the officials last po time in carrying the sentences into effect.

The last execution occurred a few days ago and a number of foreigners in Canton made a disgraceful exhibition of themselves. It is not sid how many attended the execution, but the number was not small, fe. of foreigners. It is also said that some whe call themselves ladies were present. However, it is the same old story; people away from home will do what they would be ashamed to do at home.

PROCLAMATION,

The Viceroy has issued with his commonda- tion the regulations for the guidance of mission- aries which were prepared some, time ago by the U.S. Consul. These proclamations are to be sent all over the province. I have not yet seen the copy in French which the Consul for France promised to issue. Perhaps it may come yet, but the French Consul seems to be ia no hurry about it.

ROBBERIES.

Robbery continues on the increase. Shops in the city are robbed every night. Outside of the North gate twenty-six houses were loot- ed a few nights hgo. As usual at this time of the year, the officials seem to stand asido and Allow the looters or robbers to have a free hand.

CONCERT. 1

The men from the U. S. Menadhech will give a Minstrel Concert in the Club Theatre on Saturday night in aid of the Canton Hospital.

OUR LONDON LETTER.

(From our Correspondent.)

LONDON, December 8th.

In a current review, there occurs

On the other hand, I have often heard him described as," the only possible Chinaman," "the enlightened friend of Britain,""the states."

Mr. Bouiger's article traces the life of 'Li rom the days of the Taiping rebellion through all the ups and downs of his chequered career to the hour of his death on the eve of signing the Russian treaty.
