The sacredness and importance of the family-baing in reality the nation in miniature, and, with the schools,. sharing in the preparation of the people for life's work and responsibilities, were considered; also the importance of Colleges in preparing the future leaders'of the people—our statesmen, Judges, lawyers, physicians and clergymen and the consequence of their college life, not only as a time for storing their minds but as a part of life itself. The necessity for Christian men as teachers and professors and the in-1 crease of such in the homelands was also referred to. At the meeting to-morrow even-

One poison we have seen used very effectually however, and this is Phosphorus Paste, to be obtained at any of the local 46d chemists. The trial in question was made in a house which fairly swarmed with rats at night. It was laid in the follow ing manner. Thirty thin slices of bread were cut, about an inch square, and spread with the paste. These were then placed about in the rooms most frequented by the rats, a careful note being taken of the situation of each piece of bread. Next morning it was found that sixteen out of the thirty baits had been taken, but only two rats were found, in a dying condition. The inhabitants of the house feared that perhaps other rats had died under the flooring, but as a month has passed and no unpleasant smell has been case. Since the laying of the poison not a single-rat has been seen about the house.

BLUE JACKETS were out in full force this morning at the Magistracy. William H. Davis, seaman H.M.5. Amphitrite, Ronald, Sterck, stoker H.M.S. Terrible, William Crabb, seaman H M.S. Blenheim, were charged with a variety of misdemeanors from assaulting prostitutes, breaking furniture in a brothel to resisting a constable in the performance of his duty, The women of No. 34 Ship St. claimed that the three men entered their house, assaulted one of the inmates, stole, an, umbrella, a cape and a

A Chinese constable, Lo Hoi, testified that, hearing the noise, he went to the house and met three men emerging; he endeavoured to arrest them, and all three assaulted him. He claimed that Davis was his principal asssailant. Finding they were too much for him he blew his whistle and a

European constable came to his aid. It is alleged that the three men then ran to Queen's Road, west along that street to Arsenal St. down to the Soldiers and Sailors Institute. The Sergeant entered that place and finding Davis silting there out of breath, arrested him, his companion at the time of arrest confessing
