TIENTSIN DAY BY DAY.

(From our own Correspondent.)

TIENTSIN, December 26th. Christmas is demoralizing | I have a distinct sensa of virtue in sitting down to write on Boxing Day, but recall the fact that my diary has lapsed for three or four days and gracefully sacrifice myself to my responsibility as Little Pedlington's recorder. It has been a quiet festive season mainly for the reason that so many social functions are crowded into this weak and next that there has been a tendency logo slow for Christmas itself. The weather is ideal. Hard frozen snów - all', around cloudless blue above, and thermometers some- where in the twenties. Yesterday there were full choral services in all the Churches, mixed hockey and skating in the afternoon, 'with boundless good cheer everywhere.

An Edict on the 19th inst. commanded "sacrifices, to be offered to the River Gad for keeping the Yellow river calm while the royal ferry passed over, and for the boatmen to receive Tia. 200". I have often wondered whether a sea voyage, to and fro the Pacific say, would not be excellent discipline for the old Dowager, and assist in that respect for foreigners in which she is lamentably lacking apparently. Had I the privilege of selecting something nice and lingering for the old lady my choice would suggest something of the soit and at the season most likely to give full forca to the lesson.

The provincial Treasurer Chow appears to ba a man after Yuan'sohnheart. Hehasestablished a hospital in Factingfu which is to have foreign visiting doctors, and is now organizing an office some so lifrom Puotingfu which is to deal with all Missionary and Native Christian dis- putes, and be presided over by both a foreigner and Chinese.
