THE MANCHURIAN QUESTION.
RUSSIA ODDURATE.
PEKING, December 23rd. learn from a most reliable source that the following is the present position of the negotia tions as to Manchuria, which were opɑned on Friday, between the Peace Plenipotentiaries, Prince Ching and Wang Wên-sino, and the
J
་
Russian Minister.
The Russian Minister said that there was no need for further discussion of the Convention, the terras of which had been alrenly settled with Li Hung-chang, and he must insist that the Peace Plenipotentiaries should at once accept it as it stands
They answered that they are": not very well acquainted with the tails of the previous negotiations, and as Li-kung-chang was dead, they did not feel hound to accept the Conven tion as it stands, but must demand the re- opening of negotiations. The matter could not be settled on the spot, and he conference was ended, the. Plenipotentiaries pomising to write to the Russian Minister, after they had re-considered the question."
Wang Wen-shao's desire is to abandon the terms arranged by Li Hung-chang, but he is afraid that China will be helpless is any das- trous consequences follow her rejection of thè Convention, and he seems inclined, if no other course can be found, to yield to the Russian Minister's demands, with the modification of a few points which are most unfavourable to China.-M. C. D. News Cor.
THE NEXT HEIR APPARENT.
SPECULATION RIFE.
There is a little quiet speculation as to the next Heir-apparent, says the Peking Corres pondent of the M. C. D. N. There is some] talk of Prince Chun, the younger brother of the present Emperor. This is hardly likely, as he is of the generation of the, Emperor, Kuang Hs and the Emperor Tung Chib. Neither of these would be gay nearer having a descendant to offer worship and sacrifice. As Pu Chun was chosen because he was of the next generation, so the new choice will continue in the same generation. Still it is haidly likely that any son of the bro ers of Frince Tuan will be chosen. T... family of the ance Fifth Prince, or Prince Tuan, is notoriously reactionary. Who, then, is the man? Already in October, it was tele;} graphed that a Lun Feitsze was chosen. Th... may be possible. Lun Peitsze or Lun Pai-le, i.e., Prince Pu Lun, is a grandson of an older binther of Emperor Hsien Feng, Prince Tun, g Prince Kung and Prince Chun-4th, 5th, 6th and 7th sons of Emperor Tao Kuang, Prince Lun has been with the Court and is acceptable to the Empress Dowager. He has a young brother Pu Tung, who has also been mentic ed, is açarly of the same age as the Empere and is more in sympathy with reform.
