L AND THE NOVELIST:-The following story concerning the late Li Hung Chang and Mr. Richard Harding Davis, the American novelist and war correspondent, appears in the current issue of Today :—“When, a few years back, Li visited the United States he had Mr. Davis as a fellow-passenger, and the two got into conversation. Questioned by the Chinese Viceroy, Mr. Davis stated that he was a writer by profession, and was at that time engaged in writing a novel. When he received this in telligence, Li turned on his heel, with n look of utter disdain on his face, and, as he parted from Mr. Davis, said cuttingly, Writing a novel indeed You ought to be ashamed of yourself? The first witness called was Mr. Edgar John Pierpoint, the Chief Warder at the Gaol, who deposed that the body which the jury had viewed was that of Kwok Tak Kung, who was received into prison on the 22nd Nov,, under sentence of death. That sentence, he said, was duly carried out at 5.8 that morning there being present the Assistant Superint tendent, Mr. R. H. Craig. Dr. Lemort, the Acting Medical Officer, himself, and the usual escort of officers.
Dr. R. Lamort, the Acting Medical Officer at the Victoria Gaol, stated that he was called to the prison early that morning, and was present at the execution of Kwok Tak Kung. Death was caused instantaneously by dislocation of the first and second vertebrae, as was revealed afterwards by an autopsy
The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, and the dopo ditions were forwarded to H,E. the Governor.
