steel plating, the upper deck, forecastle, and poop deck being wood covered. A collision bulkhead will be worked in at a suitable dis- tance from the stem. The vessel's lower masts will be built of steel, and will be all 135 feet. in length; the topmasts, which will be of Oregon pine, being 58 feet in length. Her main-mast from stem to truck will be 18 feet. The booms of the first five masts will be 45 feet in length, the spanker boom being 75 feet In length. The total sail area of the lower sails and topsails will be 40,617 square feet. All the standing rigging, and in special cases the running rigging, for the lower sails, will be of a high quality of wire rope. Although the vessel is to be propelled entirely by sails she will carry a considerable instalment of machinery for the purpose of hoisting anchors, sails, &c., and this will reduce her crew to the small complement of only 19 hands. Her length over all will be 395 feet, her beam 50 | feet, moulded depth 34 ft. 3 in. displacement 10,000 tons, and deadweight carrying capacity, 7,000 tons.
