THE CHINESE EGG.

MORE POINTS FOR HONGKONG.

The Bulletin still awaits with anxiety the protest of the Australian Freetrade party against the protection of the Australian hen proposed by the Barton tarif. The Customs tax of sixpence per dozen on imported eggs, now liable to be collected, amounts to 330 per cent. on the Chinese egg which has lately been arriving at our ports, and will prove practically prohibitive. The blessings of the Hong-Kong ben's cherp labour product will thus be entirely lost to the Australian citizen. The issue is such an im- 'portant one, from the Cobden point of view, George Reid, Sydney Smith and Joseph Cook should for the while abandon their sorrowful contemplation of the washerwoman's taxed starch and rally to the defence of the cheap Chinese egg.

eggs.

These are the arguments on the subject which will readily suggest themselves to every Free- trader, They are precisely similar to the argu ments used on the question of boots, and woollen clothing, and furniture, and grain, and a dozen other things which the Barton tariff proposes to tax for the protection of Australian industry. The Bulletin awaits anxiously, then, their flourishing forth in the loud squeak of G. H. Reid-awaits anxiously, but to an extent, hope. lessly, for the Cobdenites seem to wish to avoid this egg question as the politician seeks to avoid the feculent-egg of the platform. Yet, consistency demands of the great Freetrado party some firm utterance on the subject, else it will incur the ignominy of quietly consenting to give to the Australian hen, the protection which it wishes to take away from the Australi- an work-man. The defence of the Chinese egg against its local enemies is the duty of pressing moment for the Foreign-traders.

THE CHINESE CHEAP-TRIPPER,

Writing in an Australian Journal "H. B. T."

Jays:-

Premier Barton was recently deputationised by representatives of the shipping firms in- strumental in flooding Australia with yellow and brown agency. The stringent terms of the Alien Restriction Bill have kind of struck their. principals all of a heap. Hence the deputation. Little wonder that these arms are up in arms against the new alien legislation. Years ago they reaped huge profits for their shacholders (most of whom are non-resident in Australia), by carting down the Chow, in his hundreds every voyage, and dumping him in large con- signments at various points along the Austra lian coast, from Port Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south. The fares charged to incoming Chow are not based on what might be termed a moderate scale, a50 Mexican ́dollars being a common figure. This goes to the contraction "compradore," who makes all: arrangements for the would-be emigrant

includes the provision of a permit-a naturalisation paper purchased from a TC turned emigrant who has no further use for the same. A selection of these documents, with photos. attached, is always available at several compradores' offices in Hongkong, and the heap is searched until the one most likely to fit and correspond with the intending emis grant is selected Armed with this he presents himself on board, and is carried to his required port of destination. En rouse he undergoes a sort of coaching from the older hands in the topography of his, desired haven, hence the ludicrous answers occasionally given to ex- amining customs officials. Should he be bowled out as an impostor, as occasionally happens, the expense of his return fare is chargeable to the compradore who ships him. The menu furnished for Chinese passengers isn't extensive. Rice is provided three times daily, with the addition of thin soup at midday, and either boiled beef or dried fish. They give but little. trouble to those who have the handling of the | ships and growling on the score of food is `seldon · r nuver heard. They mess. in gangs or cliques, according to the port they ship from and the doings of one clique have little or no interest for the rest. Midway between Bris bane and Sydney a Chow passenger once re- ported to the quarter-inaster that one of their number was missing. Inquiries revealed the fact that several other Chinamen had seen the

The egg, it is perhaps hardly necessary to remind Mr. Reid, is a staple article, of food alike for poor and rich. It graces every break fast-table, enters into the coniposition of the Wollnominalno, baby's milk-pudding and the Toorak magnate's lobster mayonnaise From Kalgoorlie to Cooktown it use is universal. The miner, the firmer, the labourer, the strugg ling city clerk, the swerted laundress, all trust for putriment largely to the egg. A far-seeing Providence has seemned to design it, not só much for the perpetuation of the fowl species, at for the provision of an easily portable, | man jump overboard, but considering that it naturally-canned so to speak, and quickly was a case of "no blong my" pidgin," omitted cooked article of human food, : A falling price. barométer in, the egg market indicates hap piness and peace for mankind; a rise in value pinches every househeld. For many years the Australian hen has coped with the Australian demand for eggs, providing the "loid to-day." thenew-laid," and the "quite fresh "in quan- tities apparently sufficient for all demands. But, with the beginning of the new century, there dawned on N.S.W. the blessing of the Chinese egzi
