THE WORK OF THE CLEANSING DANGS. At the request of the President, the Secretary read the following return by Dr. Clark of the work done by the cleansing gangs during the past fortnight:-Altogether 691 bauses have been dealt with. The number of floors fumigated has been 1506, and the number of floors cleaned 1545. On one day very little work could be done on account of the rain, and taking there. fore working days, this represents in floors,
per gang per day. The work will, however, be
done more rapidly in fatare, for it must be remembered that this is the first fortnight's work, and both the workers and the native inhabitants had to learn exactly what. was' wanted.
Mr. Fung Wa Chun-Are the Chinese allow ed to cleanse their houses themselves after fumigation ?
Dr. Clark-Yes, under supervision. There was no other public business before the Board..

A ROWDY ELECTION. The election in Galway, Ireland, of a member for the House of Commons, is arousing an ex- traordinary display of bitterness among the sup porters of the different candidates. A pro minent supporter of the Conservative candidate has been fatally stabbed. Colonel Lynch, the ex-leader of the Irish Brigade.which fought against the British at the beginning of the war in Africa, is one of the candidates for the seat, but is conducting his campaign from a safe
refuge in Paris, fearing arrest if he sets his foot
in the United Kingdom.

EARTHQUAKES IN NEW ZEALAND
November 19th."
A series of appalling earthquake shocks is reported from New Zealand-extending over wide area, and causing an enormous destruc tion of property. The town of Cheviot, situated near the centre of the disturbance, has been almost entirely annihilated. The disturbance lasted a day and a half, during which shock followed shock in rapid succession, accom panied by deep subterranean thunderings. Strangely enough there was little loss of life, only one baby being killed, but hundreds of persons bad miraculous escapes from falling buildings Disastrous landslips have occurred in many places, and in several districts great fissures have been opened up in the solid earth. New hot springs have come into existence in diferent localities. Several towas have been more or less destroyed, most of the buildings being either, completely shattered and wrecked ar seriously damaged. The oscillations were so violent near the centre of the disturbance that hundreds of people on attempting to walk evere again and again thrown to the ground. During the severest shacks the whole district appeared to be rocking top and Iso.
