BOXING TOURNAMENT AT THE CITY HALL.
THE VIG EVENT A FAILURE,
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1901,
"Collins, the referee, gave his decision us a drywAgainst these aspersions Yung Lu is reported to and in our opinion it was eminently a fair one, When two youths like. Howard and Howell fight a good, clean, four rounds, without a suspicion, of unfairness, and are as close on points at the finish, it is impossible to separate them and Mr. Collins deserves all credit for his verdict..
A gond house attended yesterday evening to witness the various events to be se before them. The exhibition was advertised as being

on think this extraordinary title deceived anyone, Hendrick and-it was pretty generally understood that against Smith. During his training he had three or four citizens had put their heads to badly injured his right arm and found it gelber in the hope of bringing about a decent useless in the ring. At first we thought bit of sport, and having a margin left for it was the old trick of blistering, but on themselves from: the gate, The promoterslaspection we found that it was practically use. were in hard luck, a. Carver did not Jess, and Hendrick only made the mistake of and Hendrick, after malting commencing at all. Smith was very dis. furn up a plucky attempt, had to retire cwing to an appointed as he had trained hard. Before the start Mr. Musket had announce all bets off, but infamed arm.
it is a moot question if having started, Smith could not hold to the contract, vir, to be standing- up at the end of six rounds. At the same time it is the true sportsmanlike way to call off, be cause it was impossible for Hendrick to fight, much less stop Smith
•
Mr-Musket-announced the first event as being the light-weight contest between Sea man P. Keogh, of H.MS Auroru, and Gunner Harvey. of the R,M.A. Before the commence. ment Sam Bentley came forward and gave out that, owing to indisposition, he was unable at present to mees Smith of the Whiting, he would only be too happy to fight him for $30 at a future date. Smith next put in an appear. ance and took up Bentley's challenge, and what he lacked in oratory he made up in eamnesiness and said he would fight Bentley any time and anywhere, ani Sam could have his money or he would have Sam's: His little speech was received with applause and Mr. Bentley will have to remember that (although undoubtedly a good man at his weight) an ounce of fight inside the ropes is worth a pound of talk outside.
Krogh and Harvey then entered the ring to box for the "Lacock" S Iver Cup. But before time was called another youngster came for
ward and expressed his willingness to box and man for pure at 128 Bs, The old gag of p colour barred was brought up, as if the audience rared a tinker's curse about who fights, so long as they have a run for their money, and it their money the anen are willing to fight for
Time was called and the men sprung up. Right from the lamp there was only one in it, and that was Keogh. He went for his man like a tiger and never let him rest a minute. Harvey "tried to stand him off, but in spite of pluckily fighting to the best of his ability, he was clear. fought out and was counted in the first go sees. of the second round. We believe this is Kengh first appearance in the ring, and we should like to see him again. All Harvey's boxing tactics were of no avail against a natural born fighter like Keogh, and the latter deservedly won the cup that was afterwards presented to him befor the audience
The next item was between "anford and Jones On facing each other it was seen that Sanford was giving away a lot of weight, in fact there must have been about 20 heiween the two,
But Jones' avoirdupois was only a hindrance out of condition, as he was woefully while Sandford, although over a stone lighter: looked it to fight for his life
Round 1-Both men cautious and nothing noteworthy occurred during the whole of the 3 minutes. Sandford was leading and working for points, at the same time guarding against a knock out from his heavier antagonist.
Round 2.-Was a miserable farce. Sandford being content to maintain his lead and Jones already so pumped out that he could not hurt the other man
Round 3-Sandford was dapping at Jones and generally getting on to him, but with blows
that would not have made a man, in any sort of condition, blink his eyes.
Round 4-Was a little livelier as Tones could see his only chance was a finishing blow. But Sanford was too smart for him and was 'content to keep away from any infighting and let Jones work himself out.
Round 5. Was the best of the bunch. Jones going into it with determination and Sanford repeatedly propping him with his left on the right eye, which was rapidly closing.
Round 6 and last.-Jones right eye had filled and was practically useless, but he was full of fight and went for Sanford in the hope of getting a lucky one in. Sanford kept away and occasionally darted in and visited Jones damaged optic. Jones was done and was pumping away like a grampus, and too tired to - keep his right up.
Mike Collins gave the only decision posible, viz., awarded the prize to Sanford.
·A POWDER EXPLOSION AT LUNGHUA,
MANY, LIVES. LOST.
At about 1 o'clock on Tuesday morning, 3rd instant, an explosion took place at tile Govern ment smokeless powder works in the vicinity of the Lunghua Pagoda, beyond the Kiangnan Arsenal. The explosion occurred in the drying room, but how it happened will never be known, as all those who were in the immediate vicinty at the moment were annihilated. Many houses were destroyed, and at one moment it was feared that the whole place would be consumed by the conflagration which had been started by the explosion. Help was sent from the Arsenal in response to a telephone message from the official in charge of the powder works, and a large body of troops with fire engines were at once sent to the scene. By their help the major partion of the works were rescued from destruction by about 6 am, only five charred bodies were recovered from the ruins; the ré-

HOW WE BEAT THE TARIFE.
The four-master Highfelds (well-known in the Calcutta trade) was slowly beating her way up to the Port Phillip pilotage grounds in the face of a light northerly breeze. Just agains the northern horizon could be discerned the black trail of smoke from a tug burning the presence miles away. An hour or 80 elapsed. well-known Australian coal that betrays its the puffing tug ranged alongside, and a cheery voice from hier dity bridge hailed the skipper of the stately four-master.
Morning, Captain. Tow line ready? If an let one of your hands stand by for our heaving line." "Why, what's up?" said the skipper," what about the figure?" "Oh, da the figure, get your 'rope up. My orders are to get you up the river without wasting a blooming minute." The loaded end of the tug's heaving line fell with a thud on the windjammer's deck and was quickly secured by one of the crew. sick and tired of the "tacking ship" that had been going on for the last three days in a pro- longed attempt to beat the ship to port. Jack never works with a heartier. good will than at the business of getting the towline aboard a tug, always providing it is to be towed into and not out of port.
The while the crew are busy getting the cumbrous coir rope from its resting place in the forehold, the tug's skipper, who had nimbly jumped from.bis bridge into the main rigging of the fourposter, explained the situation to the captain.

THE RETURN OF THE COURT,
MORE DELAYS,
A private telegram from Kaifeng to Shanghai states that, although the Empress Dowager has gives orders to the Imperial Bodyguard to be prepared to start for Peking on the 14th inst, the Court may not get to the Capital within this Chinese year which ends on the 7th of February next--but that it will be quite on the
cards that the Empress Dowager may make short stops of various lengths en route and a stay of, say, a month at Chênting, starting ftom that city by rail to Peking about the 23rd or 24th of February next year. .
Some hours later on Sunday afternoon the
Bay, and according to orders, the skipper Highfields lay peacefully at anchor in Hobgon's accompanied by the agent's clerk, presented
on Monday morning to report arrival. This himself bright and carly at the Custom House formality concluded, a rush of merchant's clerks followed to present entries for her cargo, a pro- ceeding which undernormaleirumstances would probably have been delayed for days and might in cases have extended into two or three weeks, However, the shadow of the impending tariff compelled all consignees to adopt the hurry. up policy, and the huge line of kerosene was cleared free of duty, which, had the entry been delayed another 36 hours would have been muleted in an impost of 3d. per gallon...
This reluctance to return to Peking prompt." ly, has been variously attributed by some to the dislike of the Empress Dowager to The next event, which turned out to be as we predicted yesterday, the best fight of the encounter the cold and hardships attending avening, was a four round, two minutes goupen travelling during the spell of freesing between Howard of the R.A.M.C. and Seaman weather now prevalent in the Nonb; by others and they form a numerous body Howell.
result of the Manchurian negotiations as regards Russia. Although there may be some foundation for both the reasons given above,
On the two stepping forward Howard looked-owing, to the uncertainty shrouding the much the heavier but soft, while Howell was in the pink of condition. Howell started lead ing and was doing all the work. Howard was stodgy and appeared slow, but he was undoub, tedly countering with the heaviest blows. Howell was getting home with a straight left but copping many a stinger in return. This was the best round of the evening and weil earned the the applause it met with at its conclusion.
Round 2-Howell started in at once and almost had Howard set. But Howard came again and with his superior strength got there repeatedly and was rapidly making up hi points. Howell was nearly out on one occasion, but his splendid condition stood him in good stead and he was enabled to equalise matters towards the conclusion of the round...
Round 3-Howard quickly settled down to business and had gauged his man to a nicety. Howell would dart in only to be received with heavy plugs on the jaw that would have outed any man in less better fettle.
Round 4 and last-Both men were tiring, and, overbitting themselves, fell over each other Both were on there feet again at once and finished the two minutes as if they had only Just started.
