THE NAVY.

INTERESTING CORRESPONDENCE.

[31

[Continued.] The following correspondence appears in the Times to hand by the last mail :—

TO THE EDITOR., Sir-Referring to your article of the 21st inst on Trafalgar, and Admiral FitzGerald's letter thereon, I beg to offer the following remarks,

Regarding the first item, "a system which lightly abandons the best school for the train- ing of young officers," I quite agree with my gallant friend that any First Sen Lord of the Admiralty who reintroduced a sailing training squadron would be introducing a retrograde movement into the Navy, and in the event of this country becoming involved suddenly in a naval war, finding some 2,000 men at sea in obsolete ships. I would recommend such First Sea Lord to keep as for as possible away froin the lamp-posts in going to and from his office, lest he should meet with an untimely end.

Jagree with Admiral FitrGerald that "the standard of gunnary has been immensely raised during the past year or two," but there is still room for improvement, and I cannot forget that only two years ago at one of our home ports where there is a gunpery school ail the firing was carried out at floating targets, such targets being merely a cask and flag, which, lu - any sea, cannot be seen without great effort. There was no towing target, nor éven aby pro per target belonging to the establishment, and firing parties had to go to and from the practice.. ground in olf'gunboats of such slow speed that much valuable time was lost. That state of affairs, however, I am happy to say, no longer exists, and the serviço generally is fully' Ime, pressed with the absoluto' necessity of good shooting

I know, Sir, also, how deeply you have the welfare of the Navy at heart," and I thank you for your efforts in keeping us all up to the mark. This we all require, and I shall never forget a remark of the lats. Admiral Tryon. It was during the manœuvres of 1889, when Sir George Tryon commanded one of the fleets, and I was one of the umpires afloat. I said to blin, *** I like these mancouvres because they tend to keep us up to the mark." He replied, "like them, because they keep the Admiralty up to the mark."

There are other matters in connection with the naval service. I should have liked to touch upon, but I feel I must not trespass further on your space. I am faithfully yours,

I am not, however, in agreement with Ad- `miral Fitz Gerald in saying, “It seems to be of little moment whether our present blue- jackets are pluvsically stronger or weaker than were those of the, sailing days, for what we want now is brains, not beet." It is the case that small, undeveloped man may touch the "blooming button" and produce as good results as the larger and well-made man; but, the brain power of both being equal, I should prefer to have the finer man on board my ship, and every effort should be made, both in theMrs, and 2 Misses Cameron, Messrs. On board all ships in commission gymnastics and physical exercises should be insisted on as part of the drills, epecially as regards the boys and ordinary seamen, and, when inharbour boat sailing should be constantly practised, for although I admit that boat sailing has become little more than a recreation."
