THE EMPIRE COMEDY COMPANY

On Saturday night the City Hall downstairs was packed to witness the continuance of the Company's season. Upstairs, the dress circle was only fairly well filled, as is usual when an entertainment of this description is put on, because everyone who goes is determined to enjoy his or herself and, as is well known, it would be sacriligious to laugh out loud For applaud in a Hongkong dress circle. The evergreen "Muldoon's Picnic was the open ing piece of the evening and its production and arrangement reflected great credit.on Mr. Steve Adson, who was responsible for the : rewriting, and the business introduced. Stove: (Mr. Steve Adson is too long to write again) impersonated. Muldoon, and again gavo u an, exhibition of genuine low comedy that was refreshing to witness on account of its being so rarely` seen. There was no thing forced. The funmaking was genuine and natural and such a relief from the stilted acting of some of the artists that have visited Us Gus Gregory ably seconded him and was irresistably funny as a friend of Meldoon's" Leon sang well as Lovelace and was accord ed an encore, und Miss Jessie Thorne's con- tribution "The Island of Dreams" was as sweetly sung as the singer looked nice. Mies Florence Adelaide gave, one of her kick up dances that. pleased the audience 10 much that they wanted it, all over again, while the rest of the company sat, round and looked pretty. Muldoon's Picnic" if it is sent along with a rush and a swing will fill the house for many a night, as it cannot drag while Adson and Gregory are on the stage, and the various all good. The second part opened with a pretty dance by the Misies Davis, Tinsley and Bisters Bailey and without knowing the names the little lady on left of the stage did a great deal to make the ballet the success it was. Our heart (cut this out, Ed. H. K. T.) As we | mere maying, the dance having been encored,

· Leon and Huscham sang "The Moon hath raised he

her lamp" very effectively, and were followed by Gregory and Horley'in a "fake" balancing ∙act which was well received.

AFFAIRS IN; HONOKONG,

From the London and China Express of the 1st November we take the following - Var

We may take the opportunity provided by the speech of Sir Henry Blake in laying the estimates for the next year before the Legis lative Council of Hongkong to make a 'fow reflections upon the position of affairs generally in the colony. Although Hongkong has of late been passing through rather troublous times, caused by the plague epidemic and several grave local disasters, the general situation of the colony, as disclosed by the Governor's statement, is satisfactory. The troubles in the north of China do not appear to have, affected the colony to any appreciable extent, and it is satisfactory to learn from His Excellency that the relations of Hongkong with Canton have never been more cordial than theyre at the present time. This reminds us that relations with Canton were not always so good, and many of our readers will not have forgotten the somewhat injudicions visit of Sir Henry Blake to the Viceroy of Canton in connection with the Kowloon disturbances. The present occupant of that, posts, how ever, we may note, an exceptionally, able The financial position of the colony is also sound. The assets at the end of this

man.

year will show a substantial, balance over liabilities. During the past Ave years the revenue has increased by 61 per cent, and. tho expenditure by 56 per cent. Altogether, the figures indicato a fairly satisfactory financial position. We note that the Land Revenue of the New Territory is estimated at $30,000, Last year only $17,500 was collected; but if good progress is being mado with the survey and the settlement of land claims there, is no reason why a good increase of revenue from this source should. not..he anticipated as the result of the arduous labours of the officials of the Land Registry Department.

But although, as we have indicated, the general situation in the colony is not unsatis factory, there are

MANY.ACTS. OF OMISSION. on the part of the present Administration which have naturally had an adverse effect upon the general prosperity of the port, and evoked a good deal of local, agitation, Sir Henry Blake had something to say on several of these burn- ing topics, and it is distinctly satisfactory.to: find from his remarks that the authorities have been aroused from the torpid condition jîn which they appear to have been for some timė past, and that at last they are boginning to realise what the local Press and the bulk of -) the intelligent inhabitants of the colony knew long ago.
