THE HONOUR of being the first to reach Tai-po-hu on bicycles has fallen to a naval officer and a member of the Naval Yard Ex- tension staff Perhaps we should say, reach Tai-po-hy with bicycles, for the end of the journey had to be accomplished on foot. THE CELEBRATED VIOLINIST, Herr Marquardt, writes us from Shanghai to the effect that he will arrive in Hongkong about the 24th inst, to arrange for one or two con certs. Herr Marquardt is accompanied by his wife, who performs upon the harp, and the talented couple have been well received wherever they have given concerts in the Far East, as our exchanges all testify.
MR. F. MAITLAND was the recipient of a very handsome pair of silver bowls at the con. clusion of the cricket match to-day. Mr. Sercombe Smith, in a few fitting words, ex plained it was a gift from the members of the Hongkong 'Cricket Club to Mr. Maitland on the eve of his marriage. Mr. Maitland replied feeling ly and said; although married, he should keep up his cricket. Three cheers were given. - at the conclusion, and long life and happiness wished him.
THE HONGKONG REGIMENT are ex pected to arrive in the Colony from the North in about a fortnight or three weeks as they will travel by the transports taking the 2nd Rajputs to Tientsia and Tongshan. The transport Nanchang sailed yesterday from Hongkong with two officers and 150 men of the 2nd Rajputs and the remainder will leave on Fri- day or Saturday next by the Haiching. It is not yet known whether the Hongkong Regi- ment will be disbanded or not on arrival, but the authorities are in communication with the War Office, from whom they are awaiting instructions.
THE XXII BOMBAYS have certainly got a . very picturesque situation for their camp; by the old Custom House on the pass leading to Sai-kung. From the pass one can see Hong. kong and the harbour on the one side, and Hebe Haven opening out on the other, and the air has a tinge of freshness in it which blows all the mugginess of Hongkong out of one's lungs in a very few minutes. There is a beauti. ful "paved" road leading right up to the pass, which may be a joy for ever to the sure-footed Chinaman and goat, but which is somewhat, trying to the booted European. To sluggish livers we say, walk to the camp, but those who are not in need of violent exercise had better
either stop away—or charter flying machines. THE CONCERT to be given this evening in St. George's Hall by Madama Agnes Freed and our leading local amateurs will most as suredly tempt a very large number of Hong,, 'kongites out of their shells after dinner. Those who were fortunate to hear "Madam Freed's rendering of Gounod's "Ave Maria," at the wedding of Mr. Post, Austrian Vice Consul, on Saturday last, will be only too anxious to hear the sweet voice of the fair Californian again, and those who have not heard her should take the opportunity of doing so.. The names of
the concert are two well known in Hongkong to need comment and are undoubtedly ́a guarantee that the entertainment will be well worthy of Hongkong's patronage.
Optional Cargo will be forwarded unten The Berlin Federal Council (Bundesrath) those who hava kindly promised to assist at
notice to the contrary be given before Noon, TO-DAY.
Any Cargo impeding. her discharge will be landed into the Godowns of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Co., Limited, and stored at Consignees' risk and expense.
No Claims will be admitted after the Goods have left the Godowns, and all Goods remain- ing undelivered after the 25th instant, will be subject to rent.
All broken, chafed, and damaged Goods are to be left in the Godowns, where they will 'bo examined on the 25th instant, at 3 P.M.
No Fire Insurance has been effected.
