POOR SIR THOMAS! The following com-

boat faster than his, so there was a race between the Americans and the English, the Americans had always won but Sir Thomas Lipton who hasa shop in Angel Lane, and anotherat Forest Gate, is going to try and win the cup with his yacht, it is called the Shamrock and is painted green. THE CRICKET WEEK
SHANGHAI versus STRAITS,
EXCITING FINISH.
The sixth day of the cricket opened with the second innings of Shanghai v. the Straits, and the two not out 'men, Lanning and McEwen, came out to bat to the bowling of Billings, for the Straits, from the lower end. Ingles and Lammert continued the umpiring, and Mesars. Kerr and Lewis were at the storing-Book- Lanning took the first hall from Billings, who sent down a maiden. The pitch was very bumpy at the top end, and Lanning started with his well known stonewalling and was content with simply keeping his wicket up. Mackenzie took the ball at the top end and was sliced away to leg by McEwen. The public, were evidently not interested in the result of the match, as it appeared a foregone conclusion and Farmer's grand matshed was almost deserted. Dr. Dane was in the field again at square leg, with two lovely black eyes. to remined him of the fact that a man's hands. were made to guard his face. Billings was on the wicket' and 'neither batsmen was in a hurry, and another maiden resulted. Macken ric beat Lanning with his first, but a bye wás scored sending 30 up on the board. Lanning drove Billings to leg for one, and got the next on tile fingers of his left hand-moral, wear a

Mackenzie delivered a 'hot one to Lanning who got it on the thigh in the same old place and then it struck Voules, at Bakshire should have wicket, a painful one. saved a run from Mackenzie's next, and the over finished. Lanning sent Billings to leg for three, but with Mackenzie's third, in his next over, struck it into the bowler's hands from his glove. Score 48—1—26.
Lanning had been playing good cricket, but it was most unin teresting to watch and with the advent of Rose matters might liven up. The last named cut Mackenzie to the railings and up went so. But he was doomed, for in driving Mackenzie to square leg Whitley was
on the spot and took it well. Score 31—2—4.
-Price was next to partner McEwen, who welcomed him by driving his next ball from Billings to the screen for four, and ditto to leg for one. Mackenzie slung a swift ball to Mc- Ewen, who just snicked it to Mactaggart in the slips; it was an unfortunate bit, but a beautiful catch. Score 52-3-25.
Turebull went in and a bye from Billings brought 60 up. Price cut Billings for two with a stroke to the off that did not commend itself to onlookers, and again nearly landed into point's. hands. Barkshire was at point and, although a tride slow on his feet, what he gets he holds. Mackenzie appeared to be bowling more like his last year's form, and beat Turnbull all

Farbridge next appeared, and played to a maiden from Billings, who palpably beat him once. Both batsmen got Mackenzie away for singles by flukey hits and Price put Billings* first to Barksire, who held. Score 67-5———5
