Gwill now be able to represent the whole matter in a favourable light to the Chinese, and thus

· keep alive, their hatred of the foreigner and arouse them to vengeance for the insults they have been subjected to. It is English, too.. who have on almost every occasion been the means of dragging on the long negotiations, and thus showing to the Chinese the discord existing among the Western Powers."

PRINCE CHUN AT SHANGHAI,

ENTHUMASTIC RECEPTION.

The following interesting account of Prince Chun's arrived at Shanghai, is culled from the N. C. Daily News:-

The member of the Imperial House of China -Prince Chun-upon whom the eyes of the world have been resting during the past few months, arrived on his native soil yesterday morning. After a brief sojourn, full of dramatic episodes, in Germany, the Imperial Prince set ail for China, in the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamship Bayern, arriving at Woosung early yesterday morning the 3rd instant.

A PREMATURE JOURNEY. Early in the morning, the China Merchants' steamship aeshin, with a large, crowd of Chinese officials on board, proceeded to Woo- sung to meet the Prince. At eleven o'clock the Harshin returned up the river, flying the Chinese flag gaily dressed with bunting, and came up alongside the Kinleeyuen wharves. - At this place preparations had been made to give the Prince a fitting reception. Flags were fying, Chinese soldiers lined the approach to the wharves, and a Chinese band played un metodibus airs as the big, steamship came to an anchorage.

DISAPPOINTED EXPECTANCY.

But where was the Prince? The band played- its hardest, fireworks crackled with fearsome din, and the serried ranks of Chinamen pressed against each other with ansubdurable eagerness to witness the great one descend from the vessel. But a whisper went round the great concourse that Prince Chun was not on board, that he was still engaged in the mistication of his breakfast on the Bayern down at Woosung, and that he would not arrive until noon. The last firework sputtered a weak, protest against the delay and the waste of gunpowder; the press of people split up into small groups: the native band ceased its music; the escort of mounted Sikh policemen clattered away to head- quarters; the foreigners bent on sight-seeing walked idly up and down the forestfore, and the Chinese stared with solid persistency at

the foreigners for and her hout."

THE LANDING OF THE PRINCE.

A few minutes before twelve o'clock, the gaze of the crowds along the Bund was focusssed on. a vessel, with white sides, yellow funnel, and masts decked out with bunting, steering a mid- river course for the Kinleeyuca wharges. This must bring the Prince; there could be no mis take about it this time. The big-wigs of local mandarindom gathered round the landing place and jostled each other in the excitement of the mument. The jostling increased as the Kai

pant, for that was the vessel, slowed down, and it became tumultuous when a slim úgure, robed in Imperial yellow; maved nervously to the front of the snail crowd of passengers. With

a hiss, of escaping steam the Kaipan touched the wharf and cane to a standstill. The gang. way was let down, the figure in yellow, with nervous, hesitating step, cautiously descended, the band blared, the soldiers stood to attention, the anger, gaping crowd "closed up, Prince Chun had come to his own once more.

A

A SCENE OF CONFUSION. After landing, Prince Chun was very soon inside his carriage, drawn by a pair of horses with trappings of Imperial yellow. A guard of French police gave the salute and the carriage started at a slow pace for the bridge over the Yangkingpang. But progress was slow. A huge crowd blocked the way. Chinese and foreigners crowded round in one close, unbroken mass, and Prince Chun was stared at and com- mented on as he never had been before in his life, School children of all sorts, sizes, and races glared in upon the hapless son of Chinese royalty, and lapghed and fired off facetious

That the good impression has been weakened by the unfortunate hitch which preceded his reception by the Emperor at Berlin, and out of which he emerged with flying colours, we need not suppose.
