Dennys & Bowley dated 17th October in which, after acknowledging receipt of Gban ber's letter of the saths idem they asked if the Committee were aware that the River Steamer Regulations, as the Ordinance at present stands, only apply to vessels of over sixty tons, and that an amendment of the Interpretation clause will be necessary to bring launches of less than 60 tons within Section 38 of the

Ordinance.

After some discussion it was decided to write in reply that the Committee were aware of the fact mentioned in Messrs. Dennys & Bowley's letter. -

Major-Genenil Gascoigne, in ad- dressing the Corps, complimented the men on their polish and afterwards referred to the disbandment of "B" Company,

He said the step was rendered imperative by- the fact that, should the necessity of calling up the Corps ever arise, the Company'sservices, from the fact that the members are employed in the Naval Yard, would not be available in the particular section allocated to it in the defence scheine that had been prepared. It was only after very senous consideration, said His Excellency, that it had been decided to ask these men to send in their resignations, but there was a probability of their services being no altogether dispensed with. One very satisfactory feature in connection with the disbandment of "B" Comany was the rentonstrance that had come from its mem- in regard to volunteering, and were not. treating it lightly. NOTICE TO SHAREHOLDERS,

In accordance with the decision come to at the last inceting a letter was addressed on the 18th September to the British Minister at Peking acknowledging receipt of his letter of the 26th August giving certain information as to duties subject, and requesting the opinion of the on imports, and, referring to the signature of committee on the points raised by the legal the Protocol, expressing a hope that there will adviser of the Board of Trade, which were complimented the men on the neat appearance will be CLOSED from the 30th instant, to the

The Secretary stated that, on the 30th Sept a letter was, addressed to the Canton Chamber of Commerce calling attention to the fact that Sir James Lyle Mackay, the Commissioner appointed to conduct the commercial negotia. tions with China under the provisions of the Protocol, would probably árrive here about the middle of November, and inviting them to

either express their views on the Tariff in the form of a Memorandum, to be transmitted through this Chamber, or to send a represent tative to meet the Commissioner with this Committee.

The Secretary said that, so far, no reply had been received to this communication.

The Chairman said it would be well to write arain, and the Committee concurred in this view, it being the general opinion that the Canton Chamber should be represented here when the Commissioner arrived.

་་ The Chairman said he thought the Chamber should do something on the occasion of the arrival of the British Commissioners, though it was probable they would not wish to remain in the Colony long. He might mention that

Sir Ernest Satow was coming down to meet the Commissioners."

The Vice-Clairman thought there should be a conference between the Commitee and the Cominissioners.

summarised as follows :—

-Should the meaning of the term "deblor in the Bankruptcy Ordinance be extended so as to include, in addition to British subjecs, not only resident foreigners, but also non- residents foreigners carrying on business in the Colony either, as partners with others, or by means of a manager or agent, either in a frm name or in their own names.

2.-Should an adjudication be allowed to be made against a firm in the firm name so as to bind all the joint and separate property of the partners in the firm although not individually nained in the order of adjudication?

The Chairmansaid he was decidedly of opinion that their answer to these interrogations should he in the affirmative. He thought that they would all agree with these proposals, which were in the spirit of their own suggestions for amendment of the Bankruptcy Law, only they went perhaps a little further.

The Committee unanimously concurred in these remarks, and it was decided to reply to the letter in that sense.

This was all the business of public interest.

THE AMENDMENT OF THE MERCHANT SHIPPING ORDINANCE

After further drilling His Excellency and staff went to the various tents, saw undoubted signs that the boys had not been idle and of their quarters. Sports were held in the afternoon, and by night-fall the camp was almost deserted, as nearly everyone came back for a good night's sleep. The tests were struck early this moming, and save for a few sore heads and broken bottles the Khaki Picnic of 1901 is now a thing of the past.
