EARL OF CLONMELL MARRIES AN ACTRESS, Miss Rachel Berridge, daughter of the late Samuel Berridge, a farmer, of Tofthill, Rugby, was married very quietly at Brighton on Aug. '8th to the Earl of Clonmell. The 'Irish, peer and his bride were married by licence from Doctor's-Commons, Lord Clonmell having made the legal 15 days' residence at the Bedford Hotel. No one, not even persong at the hotel, knew of the impending ceremony,^and only a few people were in the church. Miss Berridge was not resident in Brighton, but reached that town from Cromer båtf an hour before the time fixed for the ceremony. Lord Clonmell met his bride, who was dressed in a travelling costume of grey and black, at the station, and they were driven straight to the church. The bridegroom carried his left arm in a sting, "He had but recently returned from America, where he had been shot in the arm. On the day of the Earl and Countess's home-coming to Bis- tériel hop's Court there was a warm welcome await ing them. The day was kept as a holiday by the tenantry, and when the carriage arrived at the cnftance to the estate the horses were taken from the carriage and the happy couple dag. ged in triumph home, where they were received by the Dowager Countess of Clonmell.
The bride, a high-spirited young lady, deter mined, upon the death of her parents some to or 12 years ago, to make a name for herself and a provision for her brothers and sisters. To that end she commenced a stage career under the tuition of the late Miss Sarah Thorne about to years ago. She played in the stock company at the Theatre Royal, Margate, whilst under tuition, and her aptitude for the profession brought her into prominence. Tail and attractive, she filled leading roles as soon as she was profielent, and after a very successful-pupilage joined other companies.
"The Earl of Clonmell is 24 years of age, and succeeded to the peerage on the death of his father, Feb. and, 1996, and he owes his carl dom to the law. Joha Scott, its founder, was a barrister of somewhat humble origin, but of great talents and dauntless courage. He com.
menced life as an ardent patriot, but was brought over to the Castle pany, and sat for a rotten berough, where, of course, he supported the Government, and was Attorney-General for Ireland, and then promoted to be Lord Chief Justice. There is a story, too good to lose, that he insisted on having his new carl im Clonmell spelt with two "I's," although the town of Clonmel contains but one, and that the Ulster King-at-Arms acquiesced with the words, "You know Jolin Scott-if you give him an inch he will take an!" The old proverb, "Poor as a church mouse ar an trish. peer" proved to by true in the cash of the Cloginel! family, since the sigh Earl, when he died in 1898, left little more than 7,000/ It was certainly curious that he, the descendant of a legal peer, should meet his death from scaling wax. He was staying at his place at Easthorpe, ind, when fastening a letter, accidentally dropped some hot sealing-wax on his hand. Blood-poisoning set in, and he died soon after. wards.
