At 245 this morning the alarm of fire was given, and the brigade promptly turned out and made for No: 249 Queen's Road Central. The ground floor, was occupied by a cigar merchant, the first floor by a tailer, and the second floor as a reserve store room of

ROYAL ENGINEER VARIETY CLUB,
There was only just standing room in the pretty little theatre at Wellington Barracks on Saturday evening when the Royal Engineer Variety Club again delighted a full house with one of their popular entertainments, always a. source of attraction not only to the members of the army and navy but to the civil com-- munity. The arrangements were in the cap- able hands of Sergt. H. J. McCaffery, who officiated as secretary, and he was most ably assisted by Sergt. J. J. Conway (manager), Sapper V. THE FISH STRIKE. (From Our Own Correspondent).
Canton, October 19th..
The fish strike is pretty general in the west ern part of the city, but in the east the dealers have refused to join. Yesterday the Nam. Hoi tried to bring about a settlement but without effect. His proposal was that the fish dealers at Wong Sha should allow the work of reclame tion to proceed and that when the work was completed the reclaimed land should be leased to the fish dealers. This was too indefinite an arrangement and the fish dealers refused to

LICENCE TO CARRY ARMS.
CARRY
The Pun U has given notice to the local magistrates of Kwong Sai that hereafter cattle dealers must have a special licence before they can be allowed to carry arms. The reason given is that several robbers have confessed that the arms found in their possession were procured from Kwong Sai cattle dealers. Therefore the cattle dealers must get their permit to carry arms and render an account of the arms in their possession. If this regula- tien does anything to prevent robbers from becoming armed the Pun U will eam the gratitude of a good many people.

more force could he advocate this view now a days, when Baluchistan, the only intervening country between Persia and Tudja, has been annexed and opened up by the latter Power? When such deplorable failures relate to matters that may profoundly affect the future existence of our Indaion Empire, it is high time that the Foreign Office should not be allowed to have's completely unquestioned liberty. Persia is, how as conterminous with British India as Afghanistan is, and the Viceroy ought to have his say on Russia's gradual pro-3. cess. of absorbing and assimilating the dominions of the Shab. A strong and influential deputation of Anglo-Indians might wait on the Prime Minister and endeavour to bring home to him the great and silent revolu- tion that is said to be pressing forward on the western borders of India, with the object of cutting off and isolating that empire from the regions round the Persian Gulf, where our influence is as yet supreme. A step of this sort might, some think result in the evolution of some more distinct line of policy than that which now holds in our dealings with Persia.

The details of shipbuilding in the United Kingdom for the first eight menths of 1901 make it almost certain that by the end of the year a greater aggregate tonnage of new vessels will be launched within the United Kingdom than in any previous year; and at the same time the difficulty of obtaining freight that will leave a profit to the shipowner is ever increasing.
