WASTE WATER AND HEALTH, 'A HINT FROM INDIA.

Apropos of our local water troubles, and the manner in which the water supply is cut for many hours during every day in the dry season, we notice that the more enlight ened section of the Indian press is in- cliped

ed to respond in the negative to the query-Does the introduction of a water supply scheme to a large town decrease the death rate? Some years ago the question would have been unhesitatingly answered in the affirmative, but now that figures are being care- fully collected and compared, some doubt is being felt on the subject. The Sanitary Com missioner to the Government of the North- Western Provinces and Oudh, for instance, in his last Report, attaches a most discouraging statement showing the average mortality in certain focalities before and after the introduc- tion of drainage schemes and water-works. Commenting on this, the Englishman of Calculta imagines the population-basis is that given by Dr. Nield Cook in his Report on the health of Calcutta. Natives, it declares, will

the result that stagnant pools collect, wherein mosquitoes find admirable breeding places. They do the same in Hongkong, and hence the folly of allowing taps in 'Chinese tenement houses. They are seldom in order, cause great waste, and render the houses damp and in sanitary. Our water supply would go much further if the coolie had in carry his water from a standpipe, as' can be sean by a comparison of the consumption per head in Hongkong and Kowloon..

The Britishi Association opened its annual meeting at Glasgow on 11th ulto., when the President, Professor Bücker, Principal of Lon- dgn University, delivered his inaugural address. After paying an eloquent tribute to the memory of Queen Victoria, referring to the circum-Anderson, W. H.. stance that their present meeting was the first

in a new century as well as in a new reign. and alluding to the achievements in theoretical and practical physics of Lord Kelvin, who for so many years had been a pioneer of science

in Glasgow, Professor Rücker took note that for the first time they had a section for educa: tion, and anticipated important discussions on that subject, now passing through a transitional stage. He procceded to discuss and uphoid the value of the atomic theory as a working basic explanation of the phenomena of nature, setting forth and analysing the principal lines of reasoning and experiment by which it is upheld, and arriving at the conclusion that the atomic theory unifies so many facts and simpli fies so much that is complicated that we bave a right to insist-at all events until an equally intelligible rival hypothesis is produced-that the main structure of the theory is true; that aloins are not merely helps to puzzled mathe maticians, but physical realities.

REPORT OF ANDREE. A Curious report came last month from Kankakee, in Illinois, to which town, it is said, two citizens have returned from a tour in Hud- son Bay territory. According to a statement alleged to have been made by these gentle- men, certain Indians, in the spring of last year found the bodies of two white men and the basket of a balloon at a spot 900 miles north of the Moose River. The description of one of the bodies given to the Illinois tourists by the Indians tallies with that Andrée.

J

ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. The Lancet says: the reports of the com- mission at present sitting on Mr. Brodrick's

scheme for the reform of the Royal Army Medical Corps is on the eve of being made public. In fact, the scheme may be out at any moment, for we understand that it only requires the Royal sign-manual to be promulgated. We have reason to believe that the terms offered to the Royal Army Medical Corps under this acheme will be found to be liberal, and that

the desires of the profession will be met by conferring advantages on those who display professional zeal and ability."

NO MORE ARMY PIGEONS. The last batch of homing pigeons from the Aldershot Military Pigeon Loft were removed lately and Colonel Allatt, who received a special staff appointment at Aldershot when the loft was started, now lapses back to the Royal Reserve of Officers. Colonel Allatt is understood to have had great hopes of the success of the loft. Several hundred young birds, had been. already trained up to 20 miles, and he consideed the institution of the loft by Lord Wolseley had more than justified itself. Unfortunately, however, the present Commander-in-Chief was not an advocate of the pigeon post for war, and „no other officers in high places understood: the work or its possibilities. A sum of 1,2007, had bean expended on the loft. Colonel Allatt, who

is a member of the Columbarian Society, is -greatly disappointed at the War Office decison.

THE AMERICAN BIBLE, The American revised version of the Bible, after having been held back for 14 years in accordance with the contract made with the English revisers at the time of the disagreement between the English and American committees, was placed on sale in the United States the ether day. An examination of the new version shows that the American renderings keep more faithfully than the English to the original text and that many obsolete idioms of King James! time have been cut out A striking feature is the restoration of the word "Jehovah" wherever “God” or “ Lord" appears, and the use of the word "Sheet for "Grave," "Pit," or "Hell." The new version is having a very large sale..
