theory of small dozes of phosphorus having been administered. He could swear that in his opinion the symptons he had described ware indicative of phosphorus poisoning, even although at this stage, he did not find free- phosphorus in the discharges. Some of the

σε symptoms of phosphorus poisoning and scurvy agreed at certain stages. Sudden death might occur in a very late stage of scurvy-that was a remarkable symptom. Nyctalopia was hot a sign of phosphorus poisoning but it was a characteristic sign of scurvy; at the same time nycialopia might occur without Healthy teeth might fall out in,scurvy:

scurvy.

Dr. Johnstone was then re-examined by Mr. Fort. Undoubtedly phosphorus went to the jaw and in this case he attributed the falling- "ou, of teeth to the effects of phosphorus poison- ing. The fact of the straining of the patients in this case was adverse to the theory of scurvy. If five people suffered from scurvy it would be "nusual that all five would suffer from insomnia. With regard to Papan's con- traction of the joint, the action of scurry was different, it rendered contraction of the joints difficult, owing to swelling. The garlic favour in the mouth in phosphorous poisoning was due to the irritation of the stomach, it was not the taste of the phosphorus-phosphorus would form phosphide of hydrogen in the stomach.

The next-witness was-Dr. Ellis,_Medical_ Officer in charge of the Lunatic Asylum. He said that on 'August 2and he visited the Envy and examined Captain Strachan, Mrs. Strachan, Wallace Strachan, Lionel Plummer and Papan and the symptoms they then described to him were more or less the same as those these witnesses had since described in Court. From the symptoms described to bim witness's opinion was that Mrs. Strachan was suffering from the effects of some irritant poison, probably administered in February or March. The irritant, he thought, was phosphorus, and he considered that it had been administered in

smail doses on several occasions. The burning in the throat, the nausea, abdominal pains, the intense diarrhea with hemorrhagic stools and severe bearing down pains led him to believe

that an irritant poison had been administered. The intense restlessness and sleeplessness they all complained of, the diarrhoea, the cessation of the acute symptoms after one or two days, the

pain in the liver region, and the sulphurous gas principally led him to believe that the irritant poison was phosphorus. If the symptoms described to him were correct, they were cct- tainly not those of scurvy, the rapidity of. the coming on of the symptoms and the restlessness and sleeplessness, diarrhœa, nausea, cramp and abdominal pains, and the small

quantities of urine passed negatived the theory of scurvy and there were symptoms wanting which should have been found in scurvy, there were no mouth symptoris, (except in the case of Mrs. Strachan) and no swellings. Assuming that which the witness had stated in Court was true, it strengthened his opinion that the people aft on the way had suffered from irritant

poisoning. He had subsequently analysed the urine of Capt. and Mrs. Strachan.. In the urine of the former he found a quantity of sugar- this had no bearing on the present case in the

urine of the latter he found some substance he believed to be lucine-he was unable to find any tyrosine. Lucine tyrosine pointed to a change of the liver substance when found in

the urine, and the fact of having found lucine in Mrs. Strachan's urine led him to consider that she had suffered from phosphorus poison.

ing. Winess had examined prisoner, who was then in a good state of health-Straits

JAPAN AND THE POWERS.

A STRIKING JAPANESE CRITICISM.

An article published recently in Ka Kuschin,

one of the ptost influential Japanese reviews, says that it has now become absolutely impera- tive that the Japanese shall choose some foreign civilised country, and, taking it as their pattern and example, imitate its efforts. The

|

writer of the article in question would be glad to see young Japan take Great Britain as its model. In his opinion there are only four Rations which could be thought of seriously in this respect; they are Great Britain, Germany, France, and Russia, and each of these nations is submitted to an exhaustivo examination of its respective claims to be regarded asu "pattern people," Concerning Englishmen the verdict is: They are at the same time honourable, cautions energetic, and practical. They attach impor tance to things only so far as they possess actuality. In bravery thes are not equal to the French, but the excel' them in endurance. They bear reverses with astonishing Com posure, and they are always ready to fight withs out fear to secure the mastery of their race." The Germans are regarded as being well.

instructed and farseeing: "They develop great insight in accomplishing their plans. But they rely exclusively on their cunning. They have many enemies, for they have often been the cause of unpleasant surprises for the other nations," In t'e eyes of the panese writer the French are "the most knightly of all people. They delight in playing the part of protectors of the weak, and they carry this idea so far, that they often sacrifice their lives in a noble cause. But the French nation obeys the impulse of the moment. It is inconstant, and it would be difficult for the Japanese to take them as a pattern,"

The estimate formed of the Russians is espe eially striking: Their cautiousness and dexterity makes them excellent diplomatists, and one can divelea their plans before the moment for action bas arrived. In case of war these qualities are of inestimable value; but there is nothing in the ordinary life of Russians that merits special attention."
