THE TRIAD RISING IN KWANG TUNG.
REUELS DEFEATED.
This morning it was rumoured that the rebels were still continuing their victorious march and had loated and burnt a large city called Chong "Lok," However, nothing definite could be
found out
Later.
News has arrived in Hongkong from Mr. Shultze that will allay any anxiety that may be felt as to the spread of the rebellion. Mr. Schultz reports his safe arrival at Gai-ing Chaow on the end of October and found that the Taolai's soldiers had met the rebels on the 1st instant
and a decisive engagement had taken place. The regulars were victorious and took 22 -prisoners, eleven of whom were beheaded the same evening. Mr. Ramsinger and Mr. Kastler were proceeding to the Mission Station at Piang Thong at once. No further trouble is anticipated in the district, as the rebels are in full retreat to the North in the direction of Ping Yon with the soldiers in close pursuit.

IS LIFE WORTH LIVING? "To The Episar of the "ilongwang TeiæcHAPIL."
DEAR SIR, To the correspondence appear- ing in your paper I should like to make a small_contribution. There appears to me to "be a good deal of the extreme on both sides of the correspondence. Being myself one who visits Hongkong occasionally I can look at both sides calmly. I have been struck forc ibly, with the reckless living that goes on all round, and the lack of inexpensive means of recreation seems to me to be a crying shane, Bands play sometimes, Lt generally at Hotels. Why not more often where anyote can go without having to partake of dinner? The authorities thai be are surely to blame! A person cannot go to a concert unless in evening dress, otherwise he is looked upon as a curio. All social functions are costly as things are al present; mast lectures are

RECLAMATION.
An enterprising gentleman has undertaken to reclaim a lare area of land along the river The officials granted this privilege on condition front at Wong Sha, to the west of Shimeen,
that a ground tax should be paid for the land reclaimed. The work is being carried forward rapidly and the land reclaimed will provide some fine building lots along the river front.
