There is also a large display of dwarf trees, in the Japanese section. These hideous little shrubs have a remarkable vogue, socicry at the present time, many ultra fashion-dinners, a specialty. able drawing-rooms being panially laid out as miniature Japanese gardens, and furnished with real - dwarf--trees, diminutive fountains, streams and parteries, with all that they imply in the way of soil and water. PIER DUES.

L

Scotchmen beyond the sen will learn with interest, if not with enthusiasm, that the two stumbling-blocks of their youthful' recollec- tions still continue to impede the path of civilized travel in their native land. The nuisance of pier dues (whereby on alighting from an excursion steamer you are kept waiting, perhaps in pouring rain, at the end of a long tail of shivering passengers who must pass singly through a turnstile, and pay a fee which varies from twopence to sixcence for the pri vilege of walking ashore) remains unabated. Why some arrangement is not made between the pier authorities and the Steamer Com panies, remains a mystery which no one, except perhaps a Scotchman, could possibly solve. The present survival of mediaeval usage is distinctly exasperating to the pleasant memories of Kelvin Grave, and its manifold attmetions, which seems a mistake,

One Exhibition inevitably suggests another, and from Glasgow, the thoughts turn instin-Augustin, C ctively to Earl's Court, where, following the trend of the period, what is called the Military Exhibition has its temporary abode.

The

with war, and which are largely ignored by civilian frequenters. The life-like wax figures of all arms, English and French, form, one of the most interesting sections, and close at hand, is the battery of six guns for which Mr. Kruger

But whether that which was little more than a year ago a great national anxiety, a tragedy in blood and suffering, in courage and endurance, is a fit subject for a spectacle of this kind, at least until such time as the mourners have put off the black habili ments worn for their dear ones lost during that terrible siege, this is a question of taste which every man must answer for himself. In respectia Major Gough's being entrapped by a superior force. Reuter's Bombay agent was careful to omnit, in his reference to the capture of the guns, this, from the telegram before bim. But the sights and breech blocks were destroyed before falling into the enemy's hands." This being the only part in Belilah favour was emitted by him, Again, in his telegram referr. ing to Smur's commando breaking through a party of the 17th Lancers, he carefully omits this passage from the telegram in his hands: "The Lanters fought gallarity. The Boers -ware dréised in khabt, and were at first mis.. taken før British," This being the only part in British favour was deliberately omitted by him. If Reuter's Bombay agent wants our

- that his conduct is seriously—we shall even go 'so far as to say fatally-imperilling the exis

what is meant.-S. F. Praiz.
