WOOD-WORKING PLANT

WANTED IN CHINA.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1901.

· UNCLAIMED LETTERS AT THE

POST OFFICE

Marshall, C. W. Mills, S.. Manang, W. Mills, 5, C. Mitchell, W. T. "Mundic Mullary Mary

As to the harvest itself, it is estimated that it will yield some 66 million bushels of wheat, besides some 45 million bushels of oats and barley. It does not follow that a great portion The United States Consul at Shanghai re-

of this will be lost in the absence of the parts that there is an excellent opening for the establishment of a sash, door, and wood-work-harvesters asked for. Given normal weather, it will be quite possible to extend harvesting ing establishment at Shanghai. A number of very large modern buildings at always in operations right up till the end of November. course of construction in this city, and archi tects are constantly in difficulties about interior faishings. Apparently, there is not 'n planer, moulding machine, or sawmill in China. Logs are sawed into lumber by the whipsaw process, and in every city and throughout the country men are engaged in this business of sawing lumber by hand. Mouldings are made by hand work, and all lumber ja dressed in the same way. There is not a lumber dry kila in China, and the most difficult problem in the construction of buildings is to get well-seasoned material for interior finish. A proper wood- working establishment at Shanghai would "command the trade of the entire Vangiste Valley and probably of points along the coast to the north, such as Tsintau, Wei-hai-wei, Tientsin, and Port Arthur. The most important feature of the plant would be a first-class dry kiln of sufficient capacity to meet the demands for dry lumber.

A good band saw for sawing native logs of small size and imported lumber up to 18 inches would be required. Moulding machines, planers, and sash and door machinery for making special work, turn ing lathes, and general wood-working machines would conspiele the requirements. A plant for making stock doors and windows would not be advisable, as proper material is not to be had

and the demand is not heavy. Most of the wood used for interior finish is hard wood com- ing from countries south of here. All building contracts are carried on by Chinese, and the

lumber yards are also in their hands. The best man to undertake this business would be one of good education and address, familiar with the details of the business and capable of taking the management of the concern: he should have some capital and first-class recom-- mendations; he should spend at least three months here looking into the requirements before ordering his plant; he should get the Chinese contractors and perhaps the lumber dealers to join him in the enterprise. The

Chines have plenty of capital to engage in such enterprises and do not hesitate to invest therein, if they are presented by good and cap. able men, and show chances for reasonable

profit. The arebitects will be glad to do all they can to encourage the institution, for all recognise the necessity of it.. For further information, correspond, with Atkinson and Dallas, architects, Shùnghai, Chipa..

PEARLING.

One feature of the coloured labour problem in Australia is that arising from the pearlshell fisheries on the 'N, W. Coast * Restriction of Asiatic labour there means trammelling a pro- fitable industry. The labour force engaged comes from Singapore and are a mixed lot of Asiatics. They are eigned on for three years by agents at Singapore, and at the end of their term they are shipped back to Singapore by their employers. The pearlshell is found at various depths, ranging from six fathoms upwards. The divere runs considerable risk in going down in over fifteen fathoms of water, as the pressure of water on the body beyon tliar depth is so great that it prac- tically stops the circulation of the livad, 'an 1 il a diver stays down too great a time he runs the risk—as very often happi as of coming up paralysed In fact, fully to per cent of the divers now working suffer more or less from paralysis. They are paid in most instances a few shillings a month, and £20 or £as a ton.on the shell they gather. Some of them make as much as £30 a month, and a good diver is so much sought after that some of them have been given as much as 100 advance for signing on for the season.
