Amongst their, many spoils the most im portant was the coffin containing the remains of the martyred saint, which was an object of great veneration. The eighty-one monks os guard over the shrine were only able make a solenin protest when the soldiery seized the remains.

They were brought to. London, and taken to Paris in 1317. Two years later the relics were removed to Toulouse, where they have remained until a few days ago, when the first

THE HUMAN SPONGE,

The human sponge is by no means a product of modern civilisation. vousl has recorded, his presence at the bangvels of ancient Rome Wilkinson has told us how he lurked in the. Egyptian palaces, and doubtless, if we posbess ed a definite account of the domestic economy of the Round Table, we should find the sponge cadging for drinks at the Court of King Arthur, Like death, he is common to all places, all times, and all people.

minster were taken. They were frequently moved between 1219and 1644, finding a resting place in that year in the crypt of the church of St. Servin. From that date to the Revolution very few references to their fate can be found in ecclesiastical records, beyond to mention that, together with other ralles, they were annually exposed to the veneration of pilgrims nt Whilsuntide.

In 1807 the shrine and coffin were opened and the remains verified by a commission: Apparently some fear then existed that they might be dispersed in response to the demands made by various churches for melics, because they were afterwards kept under three locks, the keys of which were held by the ecclesiasts ical and civil authorities of Toulouse. Buf in 1867 the coffin was again opened, and one bone taken out, by the Cardinal Archbishop of Toulouse and presented by him to his abbey

TO, REST AT ARUNDEL..

The human sponge starte his career with a fixed determination to evolve as much as pos- and to bestow as little as possible in return, He is generally successful in his endeavours, for by constant and arduous practice he attains perfection in the art of sponging, and moves by natural instinct towards those quarters where his absorbing faculties unay enjoy the : fullest exerciso, ...

It is perhaps superfluous to say that the sponge is always a devotee of tobacco and of alcohol. Within the confines of the satoon bar and the tobacco-pouch there le immeasurable opportunities for the pursuit of his tendencies, and although nicotine may possess small foy for his soul, and whisky but little delight for his palate, he will nevertheless smoke like a funnel and drink like a fish, merely because he is able "to do both things at somebody else expense.

The human sponge is ever a boaster If he be a "literary gent he will bore you with long-winded accounts of the huge offer made to him for his last novel, and after you have listened to his words with much weariness, mingled with a touch of envy, he will destroy the brilliant impression by asking in a hoarse whisper whether you can oblige him. with half a crown." If he belong to the theatrical profession, he will recount his stage triumphs Last evening the remains were brought to whilst moistening his lips with the drink which Arundel. The Duke of Norfolk was among the small company which met the remains at Ford, and, others who have arrived in Arundel are Car dinal Vaughan, Bishop Brindle, D.S.O, the Bishop of Emmaus and Dr. Bourne, Bishop of Southwark. Mass will be held in the Fitzalan: Chapel, and then the relics will be carried in a procession, in which the choir and school- children will join, to the private chapel of

Arundel Castle.

CONSUMPTION.

HIS MAJESTY'S RECEPTION OF THE CONGRESS.

Earl Spencer presided on the 25th ult over the Congress on Tuberculosis in the Queen's Hall, Prof Macfadycan was the principal speaker, and delivered an address on "Tuber. cle Bacilli in Cows' Milk as a Source of Tuber- 'culous Disease in Man."

Dealing with Dr. Koch's thesis that bovine tubercle was of a different kind from the human disease, he said that it was generally supposed that Dr. Koch himself had determined that the two were identical, ded showed that the artificial culture from both sources produced indistinguishable effects when they were em played to infect a variety of animals.

The labours of hundreds of workers during the succeeding 18 years produced nothing in serious conflict with that conclusion.

The spange, however, does not belong ex clusively to the two professions named in the Senate itself, is not innocent of his presence. foregoing paragraph. The Bar, the Church, the the methods, perchance, are diferent, but the root of the matter remains the same.

The average sponge is ever, like the article from which he derives his name, absorbing liquid, but it is an unwritten law within his soul that the liquor shall be consumed at the expense of anybody rather than the consumer himself. It is true that occasionally, for form's sake, he will invite his companion to "have another," but the invitation is artfully reserved until the saloon door has closed upon the retreating persons of both sponger and sponged upon. If the latter, greatly innocent, chance to accept the offer, it is more than probable that he will speedily regret the action, for the sponge will discover that he has left his purse at-home and must borrow a shilling to pay for the drinks. Needless to explain, the coin is furnished by the victim..!

The sponge's plan is to refuse nothing and to ask (with veiled hints) for everything. He usually lives on nothing n year, and contrives to do himself very handsomely on the income in question. Shyness is the only defect in the whole catalogue of deficiencies that he does not possess. He is as bold as Achilles and as desperate as Mrs. Carrie Nation when he per- ceives an opportunity of annexing some thing that its owner cannot very well refuse. Hated by all, none has the moral courage to kick him.

Now, with the utmost diffidence he ventured

The sponge, like the ghost of Hamlet's father, to submit that there still remained reasonable

Further, he suggested (1) Com- pulsory notification of udder disease, and of any symptoms of tuberculosis in milch cows' and (2) the interdiction of the sale of milk from any bow suffering from tuberculous disease.

They ought not to concede to the milkmen the right to sell tubercle bacilli, even if they were assured, that-like Dr. Koch's experi mental piga-they had nothing to fear beyond the development of "little nodules here and there in the lymphatic glands" of their necks and "a few grey tubercles" in their lungs. (Laughter and applause).

We wish he could, if only for the sake of them that hold shares, in drug companies.-- Morning Leader.
