MR. MARSH'S SECOND CONCERT

AT TIENTSIN.

Mr. Marsh gave his second and final concert on Saturday last the 29th ulto, and was again successful in securing the assistance of our leading amateurs. With a consideration and. unselfishness are among vocalists, and profes sionals especially, Mr. Marsh and his assistants readily sacrificed their personal advantage to the comforts of the audience, and arranged for the mammoth punkah which was fitted up for the Siege Banquet to be pulled throughout the performance, and thereby added immensely to the comfort of all present. It would indeed be difficult to say that the singers were much handicapped by the punkah, however, for wa have seldom heard our amalcurs, anyway, to greater advantage; though we would suggest that if the services of the punkah are again enlisted on such occasions that the pulleys be well greased, as throughout the second half of the progiamme an irritating creak made itself heard. The performance was a little late in starting, and it was in fact nearly ten when the following programme opened.

as there are sure to be cases of attempted im position practised, but the scrutiny should be done in a spirit of justice and not with a desire to cut every claim, just or unjust, in order to reduce the amount the Goveruments will have to pay their suffering subjects or citizens.

MONUMENT TO KETTELER,

A large hole has been dug in the Hetamên Street, now dubbed Ketteler Street, by the Germans, which is intended to be filled by the base of the monument to be erected to the ill-fated Baron who was foully assassinated on that spot. It is only just that a monument should be erected right there in the middle of the street, compelling all traffic to diverge to the right or left as it will, but it will be na awful blow to Chinese conceit, such a blow a should have been administered many times before in divers places we can all call to mind. His death alone at last opened the eyes of the foreign ministers in Peking, to what awaited every foreign resident, if they ventured beyond their Legation wall, under a promised Chinese escort to fiec. to the coast

ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES,

With the recall of De Giers most of the Legations will have changed heads and the Tosti residents of China are to be congratulated.

The few who are left unchanged are harm jess, and the new incumbents cannot but be improvements on their predecessors. The southern section of the city governed by the English under Captain Barrow has been turned over to Chinese administration. Captain Barrow and his capable interpreter Mr. J. M. Allardyce made many friends among the Chinese of all classes by their fearless, impartial, and merci- ful administration of a difficult task,

A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE, $. A neat little station house has been built upon the bridge in Legation Street by the Japanese, which commands a view of the four cardinal points of the compass. Hot weather is upon us and Peitaiho the obliterated is but a pleasant dream of the past. Some say it will be rebuilt, but they are the sanguine ones. The majority of residents will not want to be so far removed from the troops for many years to come. —N, C. Daily News Cor.

TUAN AND TUNG FU-HSIAN.

It is evident from the dispatches which have reached Nanking that both Prince Tuan and ung are on the war path, says the P&T. Times of the 6th inst. Briefy, the facts are that. Prince Tuan with some 10,000 Mongol horse men has, passed through Heng-ch'eng, some co miles east of Ninghsia en route, for Peking. The Mongols are led by their own chiefs and noples who received Toan with open arms when he escaped last year

Mr. Cackell contrived to wake the audience up, however, with is realy masterly rendering of the, Cayatina Satre Dimora' from Gounad's Faust which fairly brought the house down, an if not absolutely faultless was rendered with a fair amount of spirit, while the

Mr. Cockell was encored for his "I arise from dreams of thee, and gave his always popular "Take a pair of sparking 'eyes" as the encore. "Bojolly Jenkin" from Ivanhoe was evidently a song after Mr. Marsh's own heart, and certainly struck a sympathetic cord in the audience, while his "Long Agu in Alcala" only produced a double encore, insisted on in spite of polite endeavours to escape it. Mr. von Hanneken gave Mascheroni's "Ave Maria" as only Mrs. von Hanneken could give it, Capt. Cleveland contributing the violin obligato, and was naturally recalled; the excellent pro: gramme being brought to a close with the duct The moon has raised" from The Lily of Killarney, Mr. Marsh and Mr. Cockel blending spendidly together, and dismissing the audience in a highly appreciative mood. There is some whisper that Mr. Marsh may visit us again in the autumn and give us the benefit of his fine voice to better advantage in an operatic setting, if something suitable can be put on the boards, He may inspire the A.D.C. with ambition to rehearse one of Sullivan's gems if nothing in the way of linlian opera has already suggested itself.

We notice in one of the latest home papers. to hand that Miss Alice Esty (Mrs. Marsh), is thus mentioned in a notice of a recent Steinway Hall concert. "The principal event of the evening, however, was Miss Liza Lehmiahn's beautiful song cycle, "In a Persian Garden," in which the recital giver was assisted by ifiss Alice Esty, Madanie Marian M'Kenzie, and Mr. Gregory Hast. A very fine performance was secured of this work. The soprano and tenor duet "A book of verses underneath the bough," had to be repeated in response to an insistent demand. Mias Alice Esty gave an excellent interpretation of the solo, "I sent my soul through the invisible," and Madame M'Kenzie was uniformly good throughout,"

We hope we may some day have the pleasure of hearing Mrs. Marsh here.-P. & F. Temes,

IN, MONGOLIA.

SHANGHAI, June 10th, News has just been received at Peking from the Court at Hsianfu, that Puchin, the heir apparent, has been abducted, and that he is now with his father, Prince Tuan, at Ninghai in Mangolla-Shanghai Mercury.

[This is certainly a new move on the Chinese chess board. Prince Tuan has either been allowed to take his son away from the Court by the Empress Dowager, or else he has man: aged by bribes to abduct him, and stalen a move on the old lady when she was napping. How it will affect affairs in China is hard to prognosticate. We should not be at all sur prised to hear that the Emperor has been massacred, or that he had died suddenly. In that case Prince Tuan would have the Emperor. of China (his own son) in his custody. Ed. S. M.]

COREAN NEWS.

(From Japanese Papers.)

Tokio, July sth.

An official despatch to the Japanese Govern ment from Seoul states that the mounted bandits in Antangshen have not yet crossed the Yalu. The Russians who were sent against them by transports will have to land at Takoshan and when the bandits are attacked from that direction they will have to enter Corean territory, crossing the Yalu. The Corean Government have therefore ordered the War Department to intercept the bandits at the river. The number of the bandits is reported to be 3,000 to 4,000. The Corean authorites are now making enquiries regarding the actual number of bandits. Some reports state that there are not more than 800 in all, the bulk of the force being made up of natives who were forced to join them-Asahi

authorities emphatically deny that Tung-Fu halang is contemplating rebellion, against the Empress. They say he is still in high favour with that lady and has nothing to gain by rebellion. The general sentiment of the people is, however, that a future outburst' of anti- foreign feeling is inevitable. How long It may be delayed will depend upon the precautionary hood of Wiju. A force of Corean soldiers was efforts of the Foreign Powers to prevent it. While they are, vigilant and maintain a con- siderable force in the country there is not much to fear, But as soon as it is at all feasible another upnsing will take place. The Conservative party will only yield their stupid opposition to progress and reform with their lives.
